I have got great ice cold air conditioning however when it is on or the fan is on it draws air from outside the car. In stop start traffic or behind an oiler the mark 2 fills with smells. In new cars you have different filters and the option to draw air from within the car or outside! Is there anything that i can do to the GTI?

That's because the air coming through the fan is vented from the outside (under the plastic rain channel under the bonnet. To over come this, you'd either have to create a flap to block off the outside air vent OR, block the airvent totally and cut a BIG hole above the motor, so it draws the air from the cabin. There MAY be another way to do this, but that's one remedy off the top of my head.
