psh, they just sound like a headache tbh.
ill look into the throttle bodies or maybe ill just leave it as is before i ruin something!
I had twin webbers on my Gemini, they always needed tuning.
I'd keep it injected. If you like the look, why not go for individual throttle bodies?

I've tried mounting twin DCOEs on my counterflow 8v. It was an absolute pain in the ass. Most of the carbed 8v's you'll see on youtube are from Left Hand Drive car's, where the brake booster sits on the other side of the engine bay. On our cars (right hand drive) there is precious little room for a trumpet or air filter for cylinder #1, in fact, there's only about 3-4 inches from the end of the carb body to the firewall.
I've toyed with this same idea for a long time. These is all indicative pricing of getting someone to install it (cheaply i might add)
Carbs
- $1000 to buy
- $1000 to install, set up and tune/refurbish
- ongoing cost of re-tuning, etc
Individual throttle bodies (or really any standalone management)
- $2000 parts
- $1000 install
- $1000 tuning
This does not add up, unless you have a legitimate reason to keep your 8v, especially when 20v/vr6s are so abundant.
In terms of performance, there's a guy in the US who's running the most ridiculous home-brew 8v counterflow set-up, and he's only cracked 190whp. On methanol. At nearly 9000 rpm. with 15:1 compression.
An otherwise stock polo gti (20vt) which has been flashed will put out that much power. If you wanna go fast, any thing but your current motor will get there.

Quick question for the pros here:
Let's say you do all the work yourself where possible, which conversion would be cheaper at the end of the day: 16V on ITBs or 20VT.
Skill level is not relevant apart from ITB tuning maybe.

HAHAHA
Good point there Ryan. An ABF is also an older unit and might require a rebuild sooner or later?
I kinda figured a 20VT would be easier in terms of existing fueling system, already decent power output etc, when you are able to do the work yourself mostly.
It would be a pain in the arse to work out half way through a conversion that the 'other' system would have been lots cheaper.
Even though I love the idea of owning a car with an ITB setup, the cost of an EMS and it's tuning really scares me at the moment from a money wise perspective...

ITB adds cost. 20VT would be cheaper. as both need (or would have) aftermarket ECU, purchase price would be roughly similar for the engines, you'd just have extra cost of ITB's. Tuning the 20VT would give a heap more power that you couldn't get out of the ABF unless you worked it.
btw, ITB's on standard engine is pretty pointless, as it wont add that much HP, without other appropriate power mods!
However, it'll sound better than a 20VT, anyday!
Thanks Jarred, main point of ITBs would be the pure awesomeness of having ITBs! Haha.
Maybe one day...
Back to research...
