I agree with syncro GTI not GTi.

And VW should have patented those 3 letters.

Tilt and slide sunroof and small tail lights and foglight. Makes it a 1979 GTI by my reckoning. Am i right?

Is it now stripped down in lots of bits, or smashed to pieces?

Well spank my little butt i can't fn spell or count.and i don't know where the caps lock is
Now let me see i have owned dozens of 2 door beetles type 3s ,what do you call a bay window kombi a 4 door, well a split has lets see ,one on the right hand front, one on the left hand front, two at the left hand side (in Australia), one at the rear top and an engine door ,oh i nearly forgot it has a little door for the petrol thats a 7 door by gad.
gee i've even owned 2 door Toranas with lift backs, you know one of those 2 door racing Bathurst Toranas like Peter Brock drove or don't you immigrants know what a Torana is .
    What is a ute with a tail gate a 2 and a 1/2 door.
I remember some of my dads great cars when i was a boy, 2 door 36 Ford coupe as apposed to the 4 door sedan, then there was his 40 Ford 2 door sloper, and his Chevy Impala 2 door SS 327, yes I've seen lots of 2 door cars in my time, the 2 door Morris Minor was just as popular as the 4 door version here.
i had never heard of a 5 door until i believe the Japs started this 5 door business in the eighties and boy do i dislike jap cars.
Try the dictionary for the real meaning of the word door.
and I was actually around when the Golf first came out in 2 and 4 door versions in 1976 about the same time i was racing (wait for it) a 2 door Torana so don't try and re educate me on what a door is and what a boot or a hatch is.and if i want to use lower case i's i will just like vw does with some of its badging when they feel like it.At least i have owned and still own real GTi Golfs not pretend ones and i have my own opinions and don't follow like sheep.

Well Australia did have different doors (ADR rules) but it would not have been more than 1kg heavier.

76 LS's had no intrusion bars in them and were therefore lighter.
As far as weight saving on a road car it doesn't much if your mate you are trying to impress with your Golfs fantastic acceleration is an ex sumo wrestler

I have just looked through a few Golf brochures from my collection and it appears that there is no standard for door numbers.

The original Jan 1976 calls them 3 doors & 5 doors and the 1978 Diesel brochure calls them 2 doors & 4 doors. I looked at another 10 brochures for Golf 1 & 2 and they list it both ways. I could not find my brochure for the "Zweikopfen" Van Dieman special edition model.

The ETKA parts catalogue lists them as 2 door & 4 door.
A German brochure lists them as 2 turig and 4 turig for cars with turigs.

So each is correct no matter how many fingers or heads that you have

But GTI is GTI with all big letters.
And syncro and quattro both start with little letters.

Who cares  Surely more important things to worry about in your life?

I've seen both methods used and I'll continue to call my GTi what I want!
