Your man at Tafe will have to take note of what he does when he strips out 5th gear to take note of adjustments as it can be adjust in the box and if it is wrong it will jump out of 5th!!! 2nd gear the most common gear for this. HOw bad is it mate????????? The reason i ask is i had a Polo gti crunch 3rd every time up or down the box. drained the oil and replenished with Redline MTL which has better friction properties. Try it mate for the sake of $70 might extend the life a bit. Failing that the box is not too bad if you know what you are doing

I reckon I have some new second gear syncros and possibly a set of diff bolts in my shed somewhere that belong to evorobin.

    Shoot him a PM

He might not want them as he got another box.

becuase your giving him useless answers that dont address the question in the first place

Stu, just get it rebuilt, but as Jmac says try new oil in it first.

worse comes to worst, wacka 4 speeder in there, they arent that bad unless you do heaps of highway kms.

    Haha ladies ladies,

just find a wrecked mk3 and get a new box if its that bad, mine loves the crunch, Redline is always a fantastic option for 70 buks its beats 1000 bucks, really it comes down to,

    1) can u be arsed rebuilding an 020?
    2) mmmm no? lets try and source a 02a, O2j (is that mk 4? or is that o2m?) mm confused my self
3)Quaife, not really an option for anyone at 2000 squid
    4) use the gear box for marine purposes

Have you driven it. You say its not in the car?
A bit of second gear crunch is common, they are 20 year old boxes and driven enthusiastically.
If you pull it apart, you will need other parts and its not a very easy job.
I dont think that box came from me mate.
    Cheers
