I have no idea what the CO level is, I just drive as economically as I can. That means putting it into neutral going down hills and following other cars so they break the airflow for me. I drive 80 ks to work, the last 10 ks are city driving but the first 70 are on country roads and I just sit on 100 kph the whole way.

The weird thing is now that I have a 2.0 engine and average 6.9 lp100k I sometimes get much better economy if I push the car hard up hills and sit on 110 kph. I know my engine loves to rev so I'm looking forward to fitting the Euro downpipe to see what happens.

Euro downpipe is the one with 2 pipes coming out of the exhaust manifold. The normal MK2 exhaust has only 1 pipe which is quite restrictive.

    Cheers

    Hi all
I'm currently midway through doing the conversion, 2e bottom end and head from 1.8 Rv (pb head I think) one think I forgot to look into was the exhaust. I'm using the mk3 manifold, down pipes and cat, but Due to the 2e being a taller block I'm not sure if I'll need a spacer between manifold and down pipes.

I don't want to get a surprise when I pit it all back together and have to find a spacer so I don't foul the subframe or body.
Has anyone done this conversion and can advise if I need anything extra. Or is it the case that because I'm using mk3 exhaust parts, all should just fit nicely ....

You sure the 2e is a taller block? I thought only the 16v ABF was a tallblock.

    The 2E is taller.

In the olden days, last century, when I built my 2 litre MK1 GTI. I refitted the extractors from the 1800. I was disappointed to find it did interfere with the gear linkages.

At the time I put up with it for 6 months or so but evetually I cracked and fitted a std cast manifold and steel downpipes. I modfied the downpipe though.

The design of the pipes allowed me to drill out a couple of spot welds and slide the pipes 10mm down the outer sleeve and reweld.

This set up worked well but the flow was definitely not as good as the extractors. This was on a 160+hp motor, so a std head on a 2E would not be a problem.

I think it would be easy to try the std parts and if there's a problem, get a 10mm spacer made up and fit that with a gasket either side.

    Sure is Jmac!
I was wondering about the co just have to find someone in bris with a exhaust flow analyser and make up a adapter to plug on the pipe of the exhaust manifold .... Having a cat makes the hole deal that much harder... Hmmmmm if there is another way to get the co reading I'm all eyes.

The engine is now in just have to wait until the weekend to finish the install

X fingers she produces the nice increase in torque I've read about.

Keep us posted. It will be interesting to hear how different it is as a 2.0.

I sold mine with the 1.8 and bought it back 2 years later with a 2.0 so it's hard for me to remember how the Golf used to go. Plus I'm getting old and the Alzheimers is kicking in and it's hard for me to remember how the Golf used to go.

    Cheers
