    268/276 cam

    Hi guys,

Looking at gettin a 268/276 cam, its a hydraulic but im worried its gonna be too big for my gti. Ive got a modded airbox, full 2 1/4 straight through exhaust, still orig dp... Is the cam gonna work for me or what mods would i have to add...

    Thanks, Stef

i'm running a 288 hydraulic cam. it will be fine. golfworx (tim) ran a 276 autotech cam for a while, before he turbocharged the 8v.

the cams are probably the best for something a little pokey, but no crazy lumpy idle or low down torque. good for a daily.

does the motor have any headwork to it? that will make good use of the camshaft if it does.

Hi and thanks for the reply mate! No the head doesnt have any work yet, i was planning on getting some work done in the future. Is it will be possible to run the cam with stock valve springs?

    Thanks, Stefan

If the cam is new, you should ask the supplier that one. Techtonics Tuning offer advise about whether their cams should be used with HD valve springs or if stock ones will do - I expect most suppliers will offer similar advice if you ask them.

Thanks for the reply. Nah mate its not a new one and it looks like its a custom reground one... jayjay, do you use your orig valve springs or stiffer ones?

I had a TT276 in my old banger 8v with Autotech Heavy Duty valve springs.

They are basically the same if not identical to the TT HD springs.

This cam was a pig in traffic & in 4th at 60km/h it would buck & carry on, but after 4000rpm, off she went. Kept up with lightly modded gen3 V8's. But this engine also had a few other little bits & pieces.

The cam wasn't really angry enough for me, but cause the engine only had 9.5:1 compression, even this cam was too big for it.

I now currently have a Autotech 270 cam which has a nice & smooth idle with a very smooth power band & is happy to cruise along in 5th @ 50km/h & pull away.

I've had this cam on both NA form & now with the current turbo setup & overall its a very nice cam.

Thanks for that mate. So you recommend i get a autotech 270 instead? We dont really have any traffic her ein tassie and i normally take it out on a thrash on the weekend...

Is this a K-Jet car or Digifant fuel system?

What was the comp. ratio on the aussie mk2 gti's?

How good are the stock downpipe/manifolds?

If K-Jet, I'd go a volvo 2.1-2.2 fuel dizzy & airflap upgrade with a swiss cheezed airbox for starters with the CO% set at approx 2.0%

The only thing with the big cranky cam is if the gearing is too tall, which can pull the engine down & become a slug.
But if it has a close ratio box, I'd go the TT276 & HD valve springs.
Just double check what the gearbox code is on the bottom side of the bellhousing from underneath. There should be a machined flat surface with a couple of letter & numbers stamped in.

The TT276 is the largest hydraulic cam you can fit without modding the lifter bores in a hydro 8V head with 0.499" lift

If you want something smoother, go a Autotech 270 & HD valve springs.

Either way, I'd be upgrading the K-Jet setup. This can make a huge improvement not only in throttle response & low down grunt, but also keeps the fueling consistent up high.

    Hi mate,

Its a digi car, ive got the stock manifold aqnd dp but i have a g60 manifold and dp on the way which should free up that restrictive exhaust part... Its a stock digi gearbox.. 020 i think... Would need to check code tomorow.. So you think that 268/276 cam with HD springs would add some grunt and work for me?

    Thanks for the help mate!~

I haven't really had all that much experience with Digi & cams & how they cope/upset the tune/system.

But if you want something cranky & a pig, go the TT276 & HD springs

Otherwise, stay on the safe & smooth side & go the Autotech 270 & HD springs. You can't go wrong with that. But make sure you also get the vernier pulley.
This can make a huge change to how & when your car makes power

Ie if you advance the cam timing you bring the power band down low & instant & runs out of puff up top
retard the cam timing & the power band is moved further up the scale, so have have very little bottom end & then you get the power come in late with a rush.

or just leave it neutral which is the best compromise.
