Nice, work, Carl. Keen to see some more progress with this car.
You should also mention that the coil overs aren't just any coil overs.. They're DMS 50mm.
Wrong. 9A are a short block 2.0L 16v with 144mm rods. They came out in the Passat etc.
Mk2 GTI 16vs only came as a KR/PL 1.8, though.

i think the early ones ('86/'87) had 42mm, and were underpowered.. so later on they had 50mm
There is a huge range of the Pre ABF 16 valve engines and a huge range of inlet sizes. Mostly the smaller inlets were for the american market where the 16v's were detuned to try to get more torque lower in the rev range such as the PL version because the yanks were used to the torquey V8 style of engine rather than the higher revving Euorpean style of engine.
I know for a fact that the last of the 16V mark 2's had the 2 litre engine. My mate had one and he sent me a copy of a road test done by the south african equivalent of say Wheels or Modern Motor. I can't remember what the name was.
I had a South african import 1988 Mk 2 16V and I replaced it with the 9a 2 litre.
My mate had an aussie mk 2 which he put a 9a 2 litre engine in and ran KR cams in it.

Yes I can verify the late mk2's in SA came with the 9A 2L 16v. I don't believe they came with 2L 8v's in SA.
Mine is a european KR 1.8L, hopefully not for much longer. Thats the best part about this engine swap for me, they had the exact same brakes and chassis in SA so its all legal. Although swapping the cams for KR ones will net a few extra hp and am also getting a set of stainless extractors and a full exhaust.

This thread has gotten way off topic and I guess that I am a key offender. I apologise for that. However just to clarify the 2.0 litre 16V engine that I was referring to in the South African Mk 2's was I believe engine code AAL and like the ABF had 110kw or 150hp but it was a short block motor as described above. The 9A version was for the US market and had I believe around 139hp, only 1 or 2 more than the KR 1.8 but it delivered that power at lower revs and it had way more torque. The key difference between the 9A and the AAL being the intake runners and the intake camshaft I believe. I could go on but I will butt out now and hopefully we can get back on topic.

Well there you go, I had a feeling the SA 2L was a different code but esentially the same. Am using my cams and manifold from the KR.
With, a 5mm spacer the inner lip is only 3mm from the strut. Wil definately have to reverse mount them, and get the rear guards rolled majorly, but I don't mind.
