Zero tolrance speeding

Whats really interesting is I'm right now on my way back from a week in Italy, and to cut a long story short, they generally drive faster than all the set speeds, and 160 in a 130 highway zone is the norm. They overtake into oncoming traffic, and that oncoming traffic actually pulls to the side to make room. It's organised chaos, and scary as hell at first, but it just seems to work so very well, and even the coppers just drive around taking a vague interest in the goings on. White lines are definately just a rough guide over there!!

It sure opened my eyes to just how over governed we are, they wouldn't stand for it in Italy, and more power to them for that.

Agree 100%. More accidents will happen as people will spend time looking at the speedo and not what is going on outside the car.

Stupid nameless cubicle dwelling do gooders. Don't they realise that speed is a factor in every motor vehicle accident. After all if we didn't move there wouldn't be any accidents. Let people take responsibility for their actions and stop trying to wrap every one up in cotton wool....end of rant

i've had some 'interesting' driving experiences in mainland europe myself!

generally in the UK on motorways where the limit is 70mph most people will do a steady 75 - 80 but stay in the two left hand lanes unless they need to overtake.
the police don't really seem to interested in anyone doing under 85 unless they are driving like utter c0x.

Id give my left nut If drivers in Sydney that want to go below the speed limit, stayed out of the fast lane (right lane).

They are so friggin retarded its not funny. Very rarely do you get someone with common sense, that actually moves over when you give a quick polite high beam indicating you are keen to get on with it.

These imbeciles instead give the middle finger or better yet, preach ingorance and act like they didnt see anything.. whilst they do 70 in an 80 zone, in the right hand lane!! Arrrgh!!

Yep, I 100% agree with you there REXman. There are valid reasons for going significantly under the speed limit. Transporting something fragile, car is fragile, whatever. But stay to the left!

When the Mercedes Benz head of safety came out, one of the things he said is that our speed limits are all wrong. We've got 80km/h zones in suburbia, and then we've got 90 and 100km/h zones on interstate roads. He said that they should be 140km/h etc. BUT he also noted that we're terrible at staying left, and that this would have to be heavily re-educated and enforced before you could implement higher speeds on interstate roads capable of supporting it.

I remember reading that article but i thought it was one of the German Ministry members.
On the weekend i drove down a road here that had 2 lanes both ways with a median strip in the middle and a wide nature strip on each side of the road, no houses fronting it and it was 60km/h.
Then i turned onto a street (actual name was track but it was sealed), 1 lane either way, no median strip, no edging nad house frontages onto the road and it was 80km/h.

We reallty need to have a look at the way the speed limits are set and fix the problem there and with driver training.

However if we do that the Gov loses money and then you get taxed on fuel or something else so at least this way if you stay within the speed limit you don't get taxed.

It is annoying but if you don't like it there is the option of taking the tax :P
