Or, just buy a new slim line one.
The other problem they have, which you can't fix yourself, is a dead laser and means the system cannot read ANY discs. I've had one of those die on me when i was using it, but it wasn't mine!
if fixing it is going to cost $300+ just go for the $400 and some new slimline one.
One of the benefits of being a tight-ass and getting the 40GB version I guess..

keep an eye out for eb gents a mate of mine picked up a original 60gig that could play ps2 games recently. it seems some dont quite know what they have when they traded in for the slim version. the only bad thing about the slim is that it cant have a second operating system installed, which i guess is no biggy, considering not many people installed linux or other on them anyway.
