    Windscreen: Repair or Replacement

Brand new R, 2 days old. Waited 9 months to arrive. Motorway today: stone chip! Driver side 2cm.
    Question: Repair or replace?
I have both options available with no insurance excess.
    What would you do? Reasoning?

Your insurance company will probably want an attempt at repair first.

The windscreen company will probably break it during the repair, so you will have to get a replacement.

because the crack is directly in front of the driver, the ins co has said it can be replaced without repair. If it's replaced, I'll go through the dealership.
Are you saying that it's not worth trying to fix?
My only issue is that it's a factory installed glass and is brand new. I'm worried about replacing it so soon, albeit with a genuine part, because the quality of the work might not be up to snuff.

    nevermind

Ok, the insurer preferred repairer has said it must be a replacement because of where the chip is, in front of the driver. So I no longer have a choice. Thanks anyway.

I would leave it until it gets another crack. I can't imagine any repairer could fit and seal the screen as good as the factory.
What happens if you replace and get another crack within the insurance year? Do you have to start paying excesses then.

That's a good question. There could be a limit to the number of replacements. I'll look into that. I suppose if the claim doesn't have to be settled right away, I could wait and hope the crack doesn't spread too soon or too quickly. Thanks for your input!

As an aside, anybody know why the one-touch down feature stops the windows just short of the bottom? After that, you can make it go down all the way...what's the point of this?

Most important to ensure the 'screen is a genuine VW OEM part. Chinese 'screens come with a VW logo. Info in lwr RH corner of 'screen tells who/where/when manufactured. I.E. Germany is E1 (where certified). Germany is DOT27 (where made). The manufacturers name
should also appear, plus type of glass used such as // ( regular multiple layer windshield). Most ins co's won't pay for OEM 'screen, but
will allow owner to pay installer to cover price differential. Ensure installer has special tool(s) to REMOVE 'screen. My out-of -pocket was
    $100 at O'Briens, Sunshine coast.
