Plain water — you may need to squirt a bit more of it, but after all rain works quite well.
You can always refill again when you get home.
I'm currently visiting family away from home and my windscreen fluid ran low so I figured I'd just drop into a dealership and pick up a bottle of the additive (being all anal and such).
Apparently VW aren't using the 1L bottle anymore, instead using a new 500ml bottle.
The old part number was VG052164M2 and cost me $10.30 (ex). The new stuff is listed as VG052164ML and cost me $10.35 (ex). So a 100% price increase
I've still got a few 1L bottles at home so I'm good for a little while, but is there any source for the VW 1L (or bigger), failing that what do people use?

That is crazy, I just purchased some more about 2 weeks ago and it was still 1L then.
I am sure that there are plenty of alternate options, however just like The_Hawk I prefer the VW stuff (that lemon scent)!!!
MY18 VW Passat Alltrack Wolfsburg Edition + Panoramic Sunroof + some extra goodies... (Pure White)
MY17 ŠKODA Superb 206TSI 4x4 + Sunroof + Tech Pack + Comfort Pack + some extra goodies... (Moon White)
I use also Sonax, Chemtech screen wash concentrate works well too.

I have used the Repco branded stuff and am currently using "Invisible Glass" that is a US made product I bought for $10 / 4litres at Supercheap.
I know all the reports say that my nozzles should seize up, etc but I've never had an issue using non-genuine washer fluid & tap water (but it's good Sydney water that I've swum / piddled in - not that crap from elsewhere).

1981 Honda Civic hatch. Proper AUTO REVERSE cassette player. AM/FM with Stereo speakers. Four (yep, FOUR!) speed manual. Full cloth trim seats. HALOGEN lightbulbs! Factory options fitted: rear wipers and washer, "Go Fast" wheel covers & electric front windows.
I wouldn't say lemon, more alcoholic! Being in a van I'm a little more paranoid about clogging that long run to the rear window.

I always advise my customers to use the windows washer system every time they drive, at least once in a day. Using only filtered or demineralised water helps a lot. The water can rot in the reservoir if not used and it will block the spray jets, tubing and the pump.
Some windscreen additives will leave the stains on the paint, so choose wisely. Also the suggested concentration is sometimes too strong.
The genuine VW fluid is my no.1 choice, it smells nice and it works well and it is/was very well priced.
