    Windscreen chip

On a recent road trip I got a stone chip right in my line of vision, it wouldn't bother me if it was elsewhere on the screen, but my eyes are now drawn to it.

The chip has taken the surface off the glass and is rough to the touch. Not being in the know on this sort of chip, what are the chances of repairing this, or would it be a new windscreen?

    Thanks in advance...

I've had very good results with a DIY windscreen chip repair kit such as this one: Rain-X Windshield Repair Kit - Supercheap Auto Australia
Fills in the crack/chip and if you do it right, can leave a pretty perfect result.

Easy repair, but could become a crack if you leave it too long. If you don't want to do it yourself, the usual mobs like O'Briens, etc, can repair

I think O'Briens etc. say that the repair should be done asap before dirt gets into the crack as this apparently affects the quality of the repair.

Ideally, yes, a resin fill repair should be done asap. They'll try to clean it out as much as possible, but there's only so much they can do.

The local windscreen shop in the town I'm passing through didn't seem to think a surface repair was possible, he didn't fill me with confidence as I would have thought something could be done.

Anyway, thanks for the advice, I'll follow up further when I get home.

I have a chip in a similar spot. The advice I received was that mine was too shallow for resin, so nothing structurally to be concerned about. But that meant buffing is the option, but due to it's placement in eye line this could not be done due to it distorting vision. I've gotten used to it and will wait for something major and upgrade my insurance.

A full replacement seems the safest if yours is bad.

I had one very similar, right in the line of vision and it annoyed the feck out of me. A couple of hours with a repair kit from Supercheap and I can hardly see it now.

Try the kit and if it doesn't work for you all you've spent is $30 and you've still got the kit for other repairs.
