What's Legal for a 1976 Golf? (and third brake light on a 1990?)

    Hey everyone,

I'm just figuring out what i'd like to do to the project but am wondering about the law on a few things. I know some law apply only to cars made after a certain year and stuff like that.. like for having only one side mirror, there's a law that says you must have two unless the car's from 1990 or before (i just guessed that date).

The Golf is from 1976. and i'd like to get it roadworthied and registered one day, and never get any trouble from the popo..

Am I aloud to run headrest-less?

Am i aloud to have red blinkers?? if i can find a set of some tail lights i once seen (im thinking they were american) they looked like this but with red instead of white on the outside edges

Do i need to have reverse white lights? in case i go for some of these

Whats the law for third brake lights (QLD)? i've got a 1990 cabriolet, i was originally going to mod the boot for an aftermarket led brake light but i'd rather just shaving and sticking with 2 brake lights.. but not sure what's the law on that. and also, if i must have it, where should it be positioned? could i just have it real low like this (i beleive this is a fog lamp or soemthing though) or does it have to be high?

and finally, uniwiper conversion.. is there some sort of age that the car has to be for it to be able to get away with it? i remember we had a few old cars like ford fiesta mk1 and fiat panda with only one wiper (stock) if i can recall my childhood well.. and if it would be legal, i'd love to get it for the retro-aspect..

    thanks everyone,
    appreciate
    Cruisin

    Also, just remembered...
Law on exhaust pipe... how far away from the nearest opening window should the end pipe be??
i'd like to do something off the side like this on the two door (with sealed rear side windows) and wondering if its legally possible

Headrest-less is probably defectable. (i do it)

Those shoddy aftermarket tail-lights would have indicators/reverse lights, just that they'd light up red i suppose.

One side mirror should be fine, my car wasn't optioned with a left-side one from factory.

Does your car have an OEM third brake-light as it is?

    It's a Golf. Cops probably won't notice.

think if the car came with headrests it has to have it.
wouldnt the lights be fine, as long as they come out the right colour, eg. smoked lights still shine red or amber or white depending on the globe you put in.

    ahah yeah true that.
ummm for the cabriolet, it does have an oem third brake light, as for the 76.. it didnt have one when i bought it. im guessing they didnt make golfs with it back then (but i might be wrong)

and for headrest, a mate got defected (on a newer car though) so im wondering if theres a rule for the older cars

alright but what if my blinkers did flash red.. like in america.. would that be a problem? i've seen a registered import once driving around blinking red at the back.. but i cant say mine's an import from the states, soo not sure whether they'd allow the american lights. :S

i might end up asking the popo just to make sure but yeah, would rather not have to..

Call whatever QLD has a for registration department and ask them. You'd definitely need the headrests for RWC purposes.
I wouldn't worry too much about your tail-lights (apart from the fact aftermarket ones and both ugly and poor quality), how often would a cop see you reverse?

My car is stupidly loud and kinda lowish, but cops really don't even glance at it. (...yet)

most of your questions should be answered if you google ADR's, but a pretty simple rule of thumb is that if it comes standard and you remove or modify it that its not roadworthy or ADR compliant

Yep thanks, i actually have found and been reading about them ADR's since i posted this up... i found info on some of these things. there is a couple of things i might be able to get away with but it is still being restricted in some way, like the side exhaust, it is possible but has to be a certain way that wouldn't look good.
    thanks
