Mileage are approx the same at under 100k and both are auto with 2 litre engine.

Good choice, especially if the mk4 had the crappy 3-speed auto ( i know some of the late '90's models did-unsure about post 2000). I would have taken the mk5 also because its a newer car and newer model.
