went swimming with my car keys!

    Hi All,

Its been pretty hot in Melb0urne over the last few days and on Friday i went to my mates place and jumped in the pool with my car keys in my pocket! (MK 6 Golf GTI)

Luckily they dried out and seem to be working fine - although my garage clicker is not working - has anyone else done this and any lomg term damamge (internal rusting etc) did you get any luck from changing batteries etc?

I've been using the spare car key but need to get the clicker working

    Any help would be appreciated!

    Cheers

I would dismantle the key let it dry really well, spray the inside with the contact cleaner and hope for the best.

If anything gets wet, pull the battery ASAP, then rinse off with isopropyl alcohol, I have used metho too, to remove all the water/salt/chlorine etc. I have also heard people talk about using de-mineralised water first, but then metho is dirt cheap
As Transporter said, contact spray is the go if you have it.

To dry it, stick it in a jar of rice (which will absorb any residue) and leave it for 24hrs+.

    Pray.

    See if it works.

Plan B: Garage door openers are cheap on eBay ($20 - $40) and probably not all that much more at the local MR Minit

It should be noted that in many cases fixing it up only gives the device a short term revival, great for retrieving photo's off washed USB sticks or contacts out of phones, but not something I would rely on after it's working again. Of course sometimes these things do just work forever and a day after being repaired... just don't count on it.

Didn't know about MrMinit - just checked them out and there's one very close to my office so will get along there now for new batteries!

    Won't be doing that again!
