Little update, took the car to VW dealer on the coast for scan. They have advised ignition switch is not showing any error codes. They removed the Bluetooth module thinking it could be that. Drove off from dealer and radio switched off after 3 mins. So no fix really and they are saying new unit if Bluetooth removal did not correct issue. So $3k unit is what they advised, absolutely ridiculous!. Any ideas??

If you are already running 5238 firmware and there isn't an electrical fault then you have a problem either with the power block or mainboard. If it's main board you are best off buying a new one (not from dealer try vwcentral) as the replacement cost is probably half of a whole unit. If it's power block then I could probably replace it for a reasonable cost.

Hey I know this post is old af!
But I recently bought a mk6 gti from Sydney and the exact same thing happened to me on the way home at ourimbah exit and still happens every single day. Driving in Sydney and Newcastle, it is fine.. as soon as I hit the coast on the freeway it's off and on. No one knows what's going on. Did you find a solution?

Ourimbah sounds like it's the Bermuda triangle for RNS systems...some sort of buffer overflow caused by specific GPS coordinates?

What firmware version do you have.

Or do what I have done pull out the crappy VW head unit and replace it with another one , now I know there are haters on this Forum who don,t like what I do sometimes but bare with me . Ok lets look at the VW head units if you want the bells and whistles then expect a $3k plus bill , and as some have reported finding the GPS software either 3 or more years older and can cost an arm and a leg to upgrade , Now I have been buying for our VW's head units from China , to the untrained eye you cannot pick them from the original maybe except for one big difference most have a larger screen than VW's ! . Next they do not need any stupid VW coding for extras ie bluetooth is standard GPS is standard and in most cases the very latest version , you even get the VW logo on start up . Steering wheel controls work forward recording camera connects reverse camera with tracking lines Apps with Wifi and Mobile phone mirroing DAB radio AM FM and Digital TV plays DVDs and a variety of other formats SD slots for extra options and USB inputs on the rear via extension cables if needed . Ok how much well less than $450 , here is where the haters jump up and down . Oh its Chinese S**t wont last long , well ok maybe but I have worked out his scenario even if the Chinese one broke down after only 1 year at $450 a pop I can replace it with the very latest model for at least the next 6 years and still be in front of the cost of ONE VW unit . Please no nasty replies this is a public forum and I can have my own opinion .

Yeah it wasn't a thread about alternatives.
It's a specific issue with a specific head unit.

The alternatives have been addressed in many other threads and there is a range available from cheap and cheerful to premium. Like with anything in life.

Yes I agree I admit not looking at the bigger picture , I just find some people get bogged down with all the technical side of things when there are sometimes alternate ways to overcoming problems in cars .

I have a similar issue with our Tiguan where the head unit resets occasionally and starts asking for the navigation DVD. Be nice to be able to get this sorted.

    What hardware and software versions?
Does a reboot fix it when that happens?
