    Thanks. If I stay stock for the moment, aside from a flush and bleed and the usual checks for leaks, etc, is there any other adjustments on the Mk1s peculiar to these cars; ie the cross link, that will at least improve the pedal feel?

    Jump across to the Mk1 section and repeat the question, there's lots to learn.

    MK1 brakes are actually pretty good, they're just 30 years old. Make everything new again and all will be well. Diesels did get the lowest spec brakes though so there's plenty of scope for upgrades.
