VW Golf 7 110TDI fuel consumption problem

    Hi All,
My car has done about almost 6000kms since I bought it brand new two months ago. I have been observing the fuel consumption for a long time.
However, I have to fuel it up for half tank after driving 300 kms. Hence, the estimated data will be 750 kms for a tank diesel. My old mk4 GTI does about 800kms per tank. On the book, it says fuel consumption combined is about 4.9L/100km. It suppose to give me 1000kms/tank. While I have a look at my computer and it says 6.2L/100km for long term and 6.4L/100km for refuel and 6.4L/100km for since start. I have refreshed the data many times and kept looking at the data for the recent two months and never lower than 5.6L/100km on average.
The weird thing is when I look at the instant fuel consumption and it says about 4L/100km. I am wondering why ? For a 2 litre diesel car, why it takes so much fuel from the engine. it suppose to get like 1000kms/tank because my mate's MK5 Golf 1.9TDI does that 1000kms/tank. I have also tried BP, Shell, Caltex and they are all giving back the same result (less than 800kms/tank).
Is anyone having the same problem? Who knows what's going on? Thanks

Lift right foot a bit maybe and don't believe the readouts.

If you are seeing one thing in the instant readout and another for the averages it seems something must be wrong. Do you check what the real consumption is after every refill? That is the only way to get an accurate result and if it is like mine the real consumption is about 0.2L/100km above the MFD. Your diesel should be getting better consumption than my petrol, which is on its 4th long term average now at 33,000km. The four long term averages have been 5.4, 5.2, 5.3, and the present one is sitting on 5.5, however yours could be higher because of constant city driving. it's only city driving that has put my long term averages above 5. The highway driving almost always sees it in the mid to high 4's.

The only true way to get fairly accurate figures is fill it till you can see it Take odo reading run it nearly right down and go back to the same pump and fill it to the same place on inlet.
Divide it into Kms done and it will be correct.

No good using different pumps and relying on auto shutoffs Could be up to 4 L difference.

Also no good saying it should do 1000km on a tankful How may litres in a "Tankful"

I can do 1000Km in 3 different vehicles on a "Tankful"

One is the Polo, next is a Passat, 3rd is a Landcruiser They all do the 1000km

Only difference is Polo 44 L tank Passat 70L tank and Cruiser 145L tank.

    Get the drift.

Also, its not run in yet, and it wont be really 'sweet' until its more than 50,000km old.

At 6000km it won't be fully run-in yet. Most VWs seem to take 15,000km to start getting good fuel figures. Until then, drive with vigour to ensure you are getting pressure behind the rings.

Are you saying that the guage hits half after 300 km? At the half point does it require ~23-27L to come back to full? If it's outside of that range then maybe the gauge needs a tweak. I think this is possible via VCDS or the dealers scan tool.

On the book, it says fuel consumption combined is about 4.9L/100km.
Combined 4.9L/100? Really? So the highway consumption is down around 3L/100? I thought the combined was 5.7L/100...
It suppose to give me 1000kms/tank
. What kind? Sherman, Churchill, Abrahms. - sorry but as Hillbilly says, there is no measurement unit called "a tank".

While I have a look at my computer and it says 6.2L/100km for long term and 6.4L/100km for refuel and 6.4L/100km for since start.
Is the Mk7 a different readout? Isn't it Instantaneous, avg1 (since last start if more than 2hrs from previous start) & avg2 (up to 99hrs)

I have refreshed the data many times and kept looking at the data for the recent two months and never lower than 5.6L/100km on average.
Stop refreshing the data. It will reset every 99 hrs unless the Mk7 is different to all the other VWs.

The weird thing is when I look at the instant fuel consumption and it says about 4L/100km.
I can make the instantaneous consumption read 0 going down a hill & 99 going up. It's not really a useful figure unless you are trying to drive for maximum economy.

Have you tried just driving until the "refuel now" comes on at 1/4 tank with about 100km DTE remaining? That should be about the figure you get.

I don't think you have a problem. Stop playing with the buttons & just drive it. Disregard the economy because it's still more economical than most other cars. Disregard what your mates are getting because they don't drive like you or drive the same roads & they have a well worn-in MkV.

Yes mk7 fuel consumption readout is different to the others.
Since start, since refuel and long term.

I always drive in a real slow motion and just wondering if the difference between ideal and real is too much. Well, Thanks for you advice.

The real consumption is I always refuel with full tank diesel and start recalculating the kilometres. Then, it sits at 6.3L/100km on average. I fuel it up quite often and that's why I always calculate the odo metres. Thanks for your explanation.

True. I rely on my mate's data too much. I had some calculations on mine and it sits at 6.3L/100km on average and maybe it hasn't run in yet.
