I agree with you. Because my mk4 GTI has got more than hundred thousand kilometres on clock and that's probably why the real consumption is getting better and better and book says about 8L/100km but I have got 7.6L/100km which is a lot better than when it was brand new i believe. Is the Mk7 a different readout? Isn't it Instantaneous, avg1 (since last start if more than 2hrs from previous start) & avg2 (up to 99hrs)

The Mk7 has 4 readouts - Instantaneous, Long-Term, Since Refueling & Since Start. The Long-Term refreshes after every 10,000km or if you hold down the OK button on the steering wheel for a few seconds and the Since Start refreshes after more than 2 hours of being stopped or can be over-ridden through the touch screen. All appear in the MFD and all except the Instantaneous can be displayed on the touch screen. So for example you can have the Instantaneous displaying on the MFD while the Since Refueling is displayed on the touch screen (along with distance travelled, range, time travelled and average speed at the same time).

At 6000km it won't be fully run-in yet. Most VWs seem to take 15,000km to start getting good fuel figures. Until then, drive with vigour to ensure you are getting pressure behind the rings.


Are you saying that the guage hits half after 300 km? At the half point does it require ~23-27L to come back to full? If it's outside of that range then maybe the gauge needs a tweak. I think this is possible via VCDS or the dealers scan tool.


Combined 4.9L/100? Really? So the highway consumption is down around 3L/100? I thought the combined was 5.7L/100...
. What kind? Sherman, Churchill, Abrahms. - sorry but as Hillbilly says, there is no measurement unit called "a tank".

Stop refreshing the data. It will reset every 99 hrs unless the Mk7 is different to all the other VWs.

I can make the instantaneous consumption read 0 going down a hill & 99 going up. It's not really a useful figure unless you are trying to drive for maximum economy.

Have you tried just driving until the "refuel now" comes on at 1/4 tank with about 100km DTE remaining? That should be about the figure you get.

I don't think you have a problem. Stop playing with the buttons & just drive it. Disregard the economy because it's still more economical than most other cars. Disregard what your mates are getting because they don't drive like you or drive the same roads & they have a well worn-in MkV.

Thank you for your detailed explanations and I really appreciate that. I think it's different from MK6 but i don't know if it's after 99 hrs. I haven't check that if it needs 23~27L to fuel another half tank but I assume it is. On the freeway, the instant consumption is about 3.4L/100km.
I didn't check the capacity of the fuel tank and forgot cars are different and routes are different as well. The other thing is that my mk4 GTI has got 0.4L/100km less than the book statement. That's probably why I'm always oversensitive about how things are going. Thanks again.

True. I rely on my mate's data too much. I had some calculations on mine and it sits at 6.3L/100km on average and maybe it hasn't run in yet.

Don't hope for too much of an improvement with age because I've never really seen it in mine. My present long-term average at 33,500km is 5.5L/100km. The first 10,000km long-term average was 5.4L/100km. The two in between were 5.2 and 5.3, more a reflection on where and how it has been driven really.
