German car-makers forced to recall 630,000 dirty diesels – Car Reviews, News & Advice - CarPoint Australia

German car-makers forced to recall 630,000 dirty diesels

It’s been reported that that Mercedes-Benz’s emissions equipment stopped working below temperatures of 10C while GM’s European brand, Opel, after-treatment became inactive below temperatures of 17C.

According to engineering analysts, “switching off” a diesel engine’s emission tech not only improves an engine’s performance but also lengthens the time between servicing.

It’s not known if the recall will increase running costs by increasing the frequency of servicing for all models.

    Another Article:

While no manufacturer other than VW had used cheating software to recognise when a car is being put through emissions testing, it found carmakers were making liberal use of something they call a “thermal window.”

That “thermal window,” Reuters explains, allows automakers to to dial back emissions control systems to prevent condensation buildup in the catalytic converter during low ambient temperatures. This ultimately prevents rust buildup and premature catalyst failure.

Fully agree with you there. I come from a Toyota family and she comes from a Honda family. If our next car is not a VW then we will probably end up with a Toyota (the Lexus accelerator issues, IED airbags and other safety recalls have not register in my wife's sub-conscious yet) or a Hyundai
Or ... *gasp* *shock* *horror* a KIA?

You gotta admit their 7 year bumper to bumper unlimited km warranty is definitely something to consider, not to mention if you look at their stats for recalls, which seem to be less when compared to other "mainstream" brands....

Well Kia is now owned by Hyundai, so I assume like Skoda and SEAT does with VW, Kia raids the Hyundai parts bins. From what I can see on the road the Kia tend to be a bit sportier on their acceleration and handling. May have to get the wife a test drive . . .

    Volvo . . . hmm . . . no.

KIA today can't really be compared to those of yesteryear in terms of perceived quality.
The reality will become apparent before much longer, but should be OK.
VW wouldn't have a bar of a 7 year warranty, that's for sure.

To me , it's 'horses for courses' - as in Asian cars for the pacific rim and European one's for Europeans if you're on a budget......otherwise have a $10K line of credit to cover 'issues'.
For Americans it's a case of home brand unless you're one of the 1%.

I drove a Hyundai Tuscon in the USA in 2014 and found it undergeared a bit. IE doing 65MPH and wanting to pass somethiing it booted down two gears at least and revved out to 6000rpm (redline territory) Was a bit unerving actually.

In opposition also drove a Ford Kuga which went as well and didnt do the same If I was buying a vehicle like that would go for the KUGA.
    Same size similar price.

Drove a Tiguan loaner here and found it gutless compared to the Passat

Don't be so quick - Volvo makes some very nice cars these days, especially the smaller sportier ones.

The Tig is probably quite a bit heavier.
