I have no idea if this true as have no intention of signing up, but don't go in blindly.

I do know that I was told by the correct end of the horse that we would NOT have to BEAR the costs. Dont know about baring anything.

I did ask the relevant questions before I signed up and you can as well by going to their website and reading the FAQ where it says this.

"You will not be asked to make any payment towards costs from your own pocket along the way."

If you havent joined why question it.

Well I just found out my car's not impacted after a dealer passed this link onto me...
Volkswagen Australia Diesel Emissions News & Information

It says Diesel, but it will also check petrol VIN numbers.

They also said VW are planning the recall which should come into affect toward end of this year/start of next year. Didn't get any details of recall as it's too early for service staff to say anything. They did initially say power shouldn't be impacted, but I responded with how can emissions be reduced without power also being cut, which they couldn't answer...so not sure of much at this stage.

And when have they? SFA has been the norm for any euro car for years if not decades excluding exotics and even they depreciate.

If your worried about depreciation buy a diesel prado not a euro car.

I don't think you guys have the concepts of a modern CRD pinned down. Power wouldn't be the worrying factor, i would be more concerned with being able to achieve the same fuel consumption post fix. But they are saying it has been achieved and i'm sure if that is untrue we will be seeing you all on today tonight again.

I am concerned about the fuel economy, and I have no doubt that they will publish figures showing that fuel economy is unchanged.

This will be under laboratory test conditions, which is when the existing published economy figures were determined - while they were also meeting emissions standards. Now they will still meet emissions standards, and obtain the same fuel economy - under the same laboratory test conditions that were used previously, meeting the same emissions standards they met previously.

What will happen to fuel economy outside the laboratory, when the vehicles now operate to the emissions standards to which they should've been operating, but weren't?

I think this whole issue can be summed up in the words of the great Scottie (Star Trek):

I found this interesting from the Maurice Blackburn Volkswagen Class Action Frequently Asked Questions:

Am I obliged to sign the Retainer in order to be in the class action?

No. The class action is being conducted on an 'opt-out' basis, and therefore any person who acquired an interest in an affected vehicle and has suffered loss due to the alleged conduct, will be a group member in the class action. Therefore you do not need to retain us as your lawyers to be a group member. However, only those people who retain us will receive regular updates, have steps taken by us to assess their individual claim and receive individual advice from us.
Essentially, this seems to say that anyone who has an affected car is part of the class action unless they specifically opt-out, but you will have to argue and prove your own individual claim amount if you do not retain them. Anyone care to comment?

Is this a legal firm going nuts? How the hell can they drag Bosch into it for aiding VW? It's like dragging Apple into a terrorist act coz their phones were used to provide the ability to video the act, communicate with other terrorists, or remotely trigger an explosive.

There's a big difference, Bosch wrote the software knowing that the vehicles would be driven on the road and despite having informed Volkswagen that this would be illegal, continued to provide the software. They were aware that the product was going to be used for an illegal purpose, in fact, the sole purpose of the software was that it be used for an illegal purpose. On the other hand, Apple, sell phones in good faith expecting them to be used for legal purposes, that someone uses them for an illegal purpose is beyond Apple's control and not the sole purpose of the product.
