I get that VW did the whole switch thing, but I get the impression that other brands make compromises in the mapping to get the results they need to pass given they know the test procedure. This would lead to a car that might suck unless you stick the boot in to get to the real power. VW just made the compromises in a map that real drivers never see

The trolls are out in force: oilburna , ducksonetime etc. Ohhh how you have personally been cheated! Ohhh, how you are such environmentalists! Please tell us, at what time have you ever checked the nitrogen oxides emissions of cars you purchased? When were you made aware such an emission existed?

Personally, I didn't check anything like CO2 or NOx bit did look at kW, Nm etc. L/100km is nice but I know the normal driver can't get near to these figures. Thing is, in the diesel Golf I get closer to the published L/100km than in any other car I've ever owned...

Things get tricky if, after the fix we're down significantly in kW or Nm.

VW have tried to deceive and have been caught doing so - they've admitted fault. Time will tell what the consequences are...

With 5 diesels in family, every our car gets better fuel economy than specified, and that's even after 140,000km and with the newer ones even in the city driving conditions.

So, I have no reason to be worried that the fuel economy would suffer.

Right... 11 million times. Across multiple markets. And production runs....

Yes, admittedly on a trip or even lighter traffic I do meet the numbers (real numbers rather than those from the trip computer). There's something about Sydney traffic though...

Our Mk5 TDI consistently achieves better than the official figures in hills & city driving. In fact I think something is wrong if it's above. I put it down to driving style & I keep up with the traffic flow.

My BMW X3 (3.0D) has official combined fuel figures of 6.0l/100km. Lol... I reckon average you could get about 7.5, and over the 50,000km I've driven I've averaged 8.2l/100km.

The whole fuel economy figures process is broken.
