Well, I had a read of the article, and essentially, it was all conjecture and supposition. Here's one quote from it.
To use its ‘safe’ emissions-test mode and prevent the vehicle from cycling over to its dirtier mode, the testers then disconnected some sensors that might tell the computer it was off a test machine and in normal driving conditions.
So, what sensors were they, and what would those sensors have done?

2011/11 Yeti 103 TDI 6M + Columbus media centre/satnav
(2008 MY09 Polo 9N3 TDI retired hurt hail damage)
Well, EVERY modern vehicle with ABS, ESP, TCS, etc would have to have those functions switched off otherwise, the vehicle would probably go into limp mode.
This is the thing about what is going on. VW are say they have broken our trust, and then in the next breath they say, "trust us and we will fix the problem". Well, trust is not that easily regained.
This ought to be absolutely bleeding obvious to anyone who living in the true world: those expecting some form of a Wolfsburg Father Christmas to dispense that sort of financial largesse should take their hands off their privates and get a grip on commercial reality instead.

Commercial reality will hit when all the class actions come in and they have to start selling brands .

Do you actually want to kill the company and (not withstanding the cheat) the great cars they produce, or do you want a remedy to the problem and have everything trend back to normal. Governments and authorities around the world will levy punishment on the company and individuals involved, so past customers don't really need to bay for their pound of flesh.

Whilst I feel sorry for employees and shareholders they lied and cheated deliberately who knows what else they have done. I will never again buy another VW. I'm sure they will survive the German govt and EU will not let them fail.
As Forbes says the as the days go by the conversation and excuses emerging from the VW scandal are becoming almost as ludicrous as the crime itself.

I appreciate the average car buyer may give VW group products a wide birth as a consequence of all the bad publicity now and over the past years, but real VW enthusiasts always find an excuse not to desert the brand. The reasons why we enthusiasts buy VW group products will not change because of this stupid mistake or decision.
