    ^ this

If this ever even made it to the court anywhere I doubt anyone would still own the car in question by the time it wrapped up.

It will be interesting to see how this goes down with the statement that is on every brochure and I'm sure in every owner's manual.

"The manufacturer reserves the right to make changes to design and the specification to vehicles and optional equipment without notice."

Subsequent to the sale of YOUR car...eg MY variations
In any case a grovelling admission of guilt is a slam dunk

It will be complicated by the particular circumstance for each individual
eg end of lease, considering a trade in, the fact that your intention was to sell your car immediately prior to it's crash in value (the company is not going to try to disprove that) death of the driver (inheritance) so many different reasons.
VW don't want to now be shown to be hard nosed and uncooperative .....they haven't got much wriggle room.

They also don't want to be so cooperative that they break the company.

Maybe, just maybe, there will be some cash payout, but as I said before (not sure if it was in this thread or the other on the same subject), I suspect the starting point will be that they will fix your car, and anything else will be subject to legal action. Even then, the Australian legal system tends to err on limiting payouts to actual damages rather than the big "windfalls" which we (popularly) hear about from the US. Have a look at the Dallas Buyer's Club copyright infringement case and you'll see that legal premise in action in Australia (much to the relief of those that did illegally download that movie).

    8 Nissan 4,731
    9 Subaru 3,361
    10 Honda 3,210

September and October will be interesting...
    September new car sales figures:

    1 Toyota 16,594
    2 Mazda 10,864
    3 Holden 9,326
    4 Hyundai 9,311
    5 Mitsubishi 6,937

    7 Nissan 5,242
    8 Volkswagen 5,124
    9 Subaru 3,621
    10 Honda 3,595

In the August figures, VW accounted for 7.04% of the total of the top 10.

In September this dropped to 6.70% of the total of the top 10. Not a particularly significant drop, however a lot of sales will have been committed prior to the news breaking about the diesel emissions.

Compared to last year VW sales up 14% in September.

October's figures will be more likely to show any impact.

Yes, Australia doesn't have punitive damages like the US does. We won't get any more than the cars being fixed and an amount that a court decides is any loss in resale value...
