This is not "VW have now halted sales of diesels".

The options presented and / or mandated by / for VW in the USA, Europe and Australia may all be completely different, so the "two main options" that you mention may not even be the ones that apply here.
Sorry rushed post. Yes only the affected engine.

I however disagree and I think there needs (and likely) to be a one solution fits all approach otherwise you'll have various markets wondering why USA got one deal, but Europe another and Asia Pacific another again.

The information age makes it almost impossible to not do that.

    Dear VW,

I will happily settle in writing for a new EA288 water intercooled GTD engine to retrofit into my 103 TDI Yeti. I know this runs at a higher EU emission standard, and would go a long way towards helping me weather all the TDI bashing I am currently copping. Happy to set up business assisting other owners with similar engine swaps to the latest model.

    Sincerely,

    Greg.

Isn't today (obviously with time zone differences) the deadline in Germany?

Who cry about losing money on trade in because of bad publicity by media. You don't have to be a brain surgeon to figure out that it's more economical to keep your car longer than 3-4 years unles you bought a lemon. Nothing against people who can REALLY afford it and enjoy always having a fresh car.
If you 're a business you'll probably be running on a 3-4 yr cycle.

Vehicle purchase is usually made on a "Total Cost of Ownership" equation, hence some of the odd servicing recommendations of many vehicle manufacturers who try & push the big service costs out beyond the 4 year mark.

If the fleet replacement budget is being eaten up because trade-in values are 50% less than expected then that's a problem.

I know with my wife's company cars there have been quite a few brands that have been taken off the user/chooser list because they didn't perform as the financial model promised. One car is no big deal but if you are running 100 vehicles & the trade-in is $5,000 down on the predictions then you've blown $500,000.

The emissions issue is a problem if you run a triple-bottom line accounting system. If you've been running the affected engines then it means you've been falsifying the annual report based on information provided by VW.

I'm not talking about a big business swapping the cars every 3-4 years. It's about John public, who get their undies in the twist anytime there is a recall and they sense that their trade in could be affected. I say, just suck it up, it's the risk you taking when buying a new car every 3 years and it doesn't matter what brand. The same goes for me and my family.

At the time before the Berlin Wall was removed. There was a joke in the Eastern Europe. "An un injured tourist seats on the side of the road, somewhere in the west Germany next to his smashed Trabant and crying. A driver of BMW pulls over and asks, why are you crying? It's all good you aren't injured and you can always replace the car. On which a crying man replays, very unlikely, because it cost me all my savings. The German replays, so why did you buy such an expensive car?

My in-laws are German & Austrian. My wife has dual AU/AT citizenship. The in-laws tell jokes like that all the time. I think it's proof that Germans have their own style of humour not shared with anyone else on the planet.

Down under, we'd be lucky to get anything more than a software patch to remove the evil coding, then be sent on our merry way with perhaps a small hamper with a cheap bottle of plonk as a "gesture of goodwill". Who knows we might even get VW merchandise like a keychain or umbrella with that... standard appeasement of the natives with beads and trinkets type scenario.

When I had mine serviced last Friday at the dealer service centre in vic park, I raised my concern about the potential impact of the scandal here in Australia. The customer service guy I dealt with came across to me as dismissive and non-plussed bout the whole thing and even had the gall to say that if anything were to be done it'd just be a software patch, no big deal. I was like, yeah... ok buddy. I mean seriously, now is NOT the time for arrogance.

Been repeated to death but if it involves reduced power torque and increases in fuel economy the lawyers will be circling

I do feel sorry for VW employees... Interesting story in the AFR this morning too, page 30, now might be a good time to buy VW shares was the bottom line.

Yep, I agree. Can't see them doing much here...
