The options presented and / or mandated by / for VW in the USA, Europe and Australia may all be completely different, so the "two main options" that you mention may not even be the ones that apply here.
Down under, we'd be lucky to get anything more than a software patch to remove the evil coding, then be sent on our merry way with perhaps a small hamper with a cheap bottle of plonk as a "gesture of goodwill". Who knows we might even get VW merchandise like a keychain or umbrella with that... standard appeasement of the natives with beads and trinkets type scenario.
When I had mine serviced last Friday at the dealer service centre in vic park, I raised my concern about the potential impact of the scandal here in Australia. The customer service guy I dealt with came across to me as dismissive and non-plussed bout the whole thing and even had the gall to say that if anything were to be done it'd just be a software patch, no big deal. I was like, yeah... ok buddy. I mean seriously, now is NOT the time for arrogance.
