The M3 is a no go due to $4K a year running costs (+fuel ofcourse).p, compared with $1500 for the R.
It's the impreza and R now but I think I'm going to stick with the R after sitting in the base STI which is the one I could afford. I don't want to spend more than 60ish on a car now. And the sti base does not come with sat nav or anything. You have to get the sti R for that =70k. And it looks like my my09 wrx inside. Not really worth it for me I reckon
Half the fun is that cause I have been following the R now for so long it would be akward buying something else.

Before doing the VW driver training I had never considered buying a VW (which really wasn't driver training, more like VW promo day) .
Having owned 3 Subaru Libertys I needed a SUV (because I was teaching scuba on the weekend, and the Liberty's boot was too small), a Forrester was a logic choice, but going from a Liberty to a Forrester the interior looked cheap. As it was going to be a company car for 2 years I decided to give a Santa Fe R (2.2lt diesel 145KW ~440nm torque).
I was pretty happy with the Santa Fe's powerful engine, giving me similar acceleration to the Liberty, but with a huge amount of extra space. I drove Perth - Adelaide Perth over Xmas and it was pretty good, getting 1000km per tank, plenty of accelerating for overtaking.
What I hated about the Santa Fe was the lack of refinement in road handling. I can't even believe they claim All Wheel Drive. The AWD system was as slow as a CRV, and while spin was common accelerating from corners. In other words the Santa Fe had power and space, but handled like crap.
Last year I was invited to the VW driver training, and I was impressed with the Golf GTI, it was raining and they challenged us to get the car off the road. I tried but it just didn't happen.
I also took the opportunity to try the Tiguan on the cone weaves etc. Even though I was pushing it hard, I only hit the last cone after coming out of the last one a bit too wide. I was impressed, as the Santa Fe would have had no chance.
And while VW markets this as a driver training day, it was a really good marketing exercise resulting in me signing an order for a 2012 MY 147 TSI Tiguan last week. Hoping for delivery in December.
I guess the event was successful.
Doesnt look like its free anymore...

Well, it depends whether it's an actual course or not. Last year the "driver training" wasn't REALLY driver training. It was just a fun 1/2 day/marketting exercise. These could be different.
Woah that's poo. Honestly when I attended last year it wasn't driver training, it was, "try a VW day". I really won't consider paying $200 (plus $20 GST) unless it was a real course.
Lucky for VW it was free last year, otherwise I wouldn't have attended and I wouldn't have switch from Subaru to VW, and ordered a Tiguan. Lose $200 gain a $46,000 sale!
What the frig man?!
I didnt get to go last year and was keyed up to go this year, but now I have to pay for it? I just popped >$60K onto VW.
But yeah it looks like you have to pay now.. What a bummer.. dont make this the start of many VW hate building exercises.
