The thing about a laser detector is that if you can detect it, it has detected you.
You may not be the one being targeted anyway. If you are, then any alert is too late.
What the officer sees is a targeting laser. This is the red dot. The measuring laser is an infra-red laser which is invisible to the naked eye. It is also not as "precise" as the targeting laser. It spreads out in a cone so that at around 100 m, it is well over 1 m in diameter. So, one of these units might pick you up if you are not the one with the spot on you (they try and point to a reflective surface), however if you do happen to be speeding, then the poor guy on whom the spot is is the one getting the ticket. The units do not lock on to the fastest object in the field. The officer aims it and the unit gives a speed reading for the fastest object reflecting the beam.
Its radar detecting function may help because the spread of the radar beam is even bigger than for laser and so you may pick up a radar gun if you are on the edge of the field. Again, if you are the fastest, then the radar gun will flag a speeding vehicle, however the officer will issue it to the vehicle in the crosshairs as there is no indication which vehicle is actually speeding.
For $24.99, it is not a great loss, however you might still want to check with Customs to see if they will let it through. They may be legal to own in WA, however they may still be a prohibited import.
