Using ''old'' petrol in Golf Mk2?

Hey people,

I would have wanted to post this in the lubricants section but wasn't able to.

I have several jerrycans in the garage containing unleaded petrol, purchased about 16 months ago. Does anyone know if that can still be used ? - it's been stored in a plastic container. I was thinking of adding it gradually to a about half full reservoir ... I don't want to do any damage though. Anyone got any ideas how long this lasts for?

The previous owner of my car stronly advised me not to use anything below 95 Ron in my MK2 as standard 91 Ron makes the car 'run like craap'.

This is assuming you have 91 in those cans
Do you have a lawnmower/weedwacker/blower/chainsaw? Those things will run on petrol of any age/condition.

I wouldn't if I had the choice, but its up to you.
Btw is your MK2 Digi or Kjet?

Petrol has a shelf life of around 6-12 months, I wouldn't risk it.

hooba is right but if it was me (because i am a tight-arse), I'd add maybe 10-20% at a time to some 95ron - preferably one of the 10% ethanol 95ron fuels (to soak up any moisture that may be in the fuel).

Alternatively, you are now pretty right for parts washing fluid for a long time

thank's for that! Actually, this is unleaded 95 but I purchased it when petrol prices were down to use it some time later. I had no bloody idea that this wouldn't last ... how stupid of me.

I have an electric lawnmover so no use for it there ... shame ...

my wife's family is in the fuel game, and the rule of thumb for fuel out of the refinery and then out of the bowser is you lose 1 point of RON every few weeks. That process then accelerates as the fuel gets staler.

I wouldn't use that fuel you have in anything - its not even worth blowing up the chainsaw.

fair enough, mate; maybe it can be used for ''washing'' stuff out of some sort. I definately won't use it in the car ;o)

You could use it either for cleaning up graffiti or as after shave.
