My car took about 10 weeks from order to delivery...
Think I did about 1750km in that time.....
I'd reckon that so long as the distance travelled isn't excessive, you will be ok...They will have factored average mileage into the trade.
Here's one....
I've signed for the Golf and they've given me the trade in price on my older Mazda.
The new car ya not here until end of the month, but if I drive the old car a bit (we've just moved house, that was a few k's trekking!), and the odo is higher than what they signed off for, is that ok ?
Do they expect people to drive the trade in around while waiting, given it's not excessive ?

depends upon the dealer.
If they have already offered you a price etc then they should've factored your use into the trade in price. It will be in their best interest to get you ur new car asap so that they dont lose out too much on your trade in.
There is also the option for them to take your trade in car now and give you a loan car till the new one arrives. This is usually done if they can sell yours immediately.
coz its only till the end of the month then it wont be a big issue. if it was a 3-4 month wait then they would not give you a trade in price now without wanting the car now as a lot can happen in that time.

If they haven't given you a date, don't worry.
I traded an 8yo Barina once with 40,000km & they wanted it that day. The new car wasn't due for 2 weeks, so they gave me another car off the lot to drive (Hornsby Nissan about 12 years back)

Yeah just ask them and see, could be a good excuse to get them to confirm the delivery date too to make sure it doesn't drag out.
Agree that if the odo is only slightly higher it wouldn't matter, but Austral did offer Mav less trade in than what was agreed on so you never know.
Just ask...I did (With Nepean Motor Group), and they didn't have a problem when I put an extra 2000km on it after I signed for my Polo.
"If can't get behind your troops, feel free to stand in front of them..."
I had an agreement with Austral Volkswagen in Brisbane (pathetic dealer) and they gave me a price for my trade in of $23K. There was an error on the first contract so they reprinted it and just as I was signing it I noted the trade was $22K. I queried this and he said that as the car was three months away they were knocking $1000 off and would be holding the buyer to the price. The contract didn't allow for changes to the trade in price and there were no extra terms and conditions.
Fast forward three months and the car is dropped off (rego and insurance were due) and my car was delayed. A week later after rego and insurance had expired they came back offered $18K trade plus wanted me to pay more for my car +$1000 for loss of corporate discount (long story but dealer lied) and I'd sourced a car coming in with the same specs as my delayed car but it had a sunroof so +$1890 which they wouldn't budge on (thanks to 2muchcoffeeman for the car).
I had done all the work and they assured me they would organise with Burwin to get that car and they could cancel my delayed car (still not in production) but the sales manager "cars are a waste of money - boats are so much better" (this is what he told a couple he took out for a test drive!) didn't want to take the other car and possibly get stuck with the car that wasn't in production yet. They didn't communicate with Burwin other than a call to their sales manager to confirm they would take the car but they wouldn't answer calls from Burwin after that nor would they send the transfer paperwork.
The end result was that Austral screwed me over big time in order to get me to sign, misled me throughout the process and the whole experience was unfortunately as I found out not too uncommon for Austral despite numerous changes to staff. I told them to stick their contract, reregistered the car, re-insured it and went down to pick it up to find that their staff had been smoking in the car (never had anyone smoked in it) and to top it off they made me wait 90 minutes for the car
I went to another dealer (Highway Auto) and they were so much better, they didn't lie, they gave me a good discount (very good considering), a fair trade and stayed back late to complete the deal. They organised an extension of my finance until my car arrived, held the price and did everything they said they would do.
As for the loan car above, I was told clearly by the sales manager at Austral that they weren't AVIS, that he might be able to get me a car now and again for a day and that he wished he didn't have to give his sales staff a car to take home. All round he was a great guy
So it all depends on the dealer, if they are a decent dealer with morals and ethics as I found with Highway they will do what they promise. If on the other hand they're a dealer like Austral remove your belt before you arrive to save time.

I asked today at Barloworld - they said it's fine, obviously as long as it's not excessive, but the sales guy asked how old the car was (told him 2006), so I think the older the car the less important it is.
I'm aiming to keep the driving down anyway, might get myself a few lifts out of it
Side note about the loan cars - it doesn't apply so much to this situation as you've mentioned Mav, but Barloworld do have courtesy cars for servicing (booked ahead enough !) - so they're not all bad (unlike Holden, who charge $40/day for the privelidge - no wonder the servicing costs are so low !)
