My mate bought one and we just finished a 6 hour drive in it.
Handles great but, poor interior, crap stereo, and a constant metal clanging from the rear.
He mentioned that most of the cars in the 86 club have the same problem.
It sounds like the body is not finished properly...much like the interior.
and $30,000 seemsto blow out to $ 40,000 for most!
There are much better cars for less money, looks alone are not enough to buy a car.

Thanks for sharing that info. I will pass it on to a few mates looking at buying one. It is a pity about the crap quality of the items you mention. Very few rear drive cars (new and in this price range) for the enthusiast.

you have to remember it's 35k plus on roads so more like 38k.
So you might as well buy a Mk6 GTI plus a tune or a focus st like in the video.

A lot of people actually paid more than retail in the first few months as demand was so high that dealers were asking 3-5k over base price and getting it becasue people want to have a "rwd enthusiast car that handles great" (read: sports car looks and mad skids yo).

From memory they were asking more than retail for the Polo GTI because htre waiting period blew out to 18 months for a custom order.

The 86 provides a naturally-aspirated engine, a manual gearbox, a RWD drivetrain and, by most accounts, a well tuned and well regarded suspension setup, all enclosed within a relatively small, lightweight (for a modern car :p) two-door coupe body. With a RRP of $29,990 and a warranty.

If one happens to be in a market for such a car with all of those requirements, then there is practically no peer unless you start ramping up the price or start comparing used cars.

But for what it is and what it represents for the motoring enthusiast or purist, it's a good car.

If a nicely designed and appointed interior that's pleasing to see and touch is what one is after, then clearly, this car does not fit the bill.
