It's funny how there's always a fat, short, bald guy in these stories...
Did he end up walking into a bar?

Get your mate to call VW Australia and discuss the issue with them, instead of employing you to write frustrated posts over a second hand story on a public forum.
Might be time to turn the computer off, eh?

I would like to add that VGA do also get highly problematic cars and components that other VW dealerships have not been able to fix, they get these problems to find ways of fixing the issues and pass that information on to the dealer network as a tpi. Yes a wheel brace might not be the best tool but maybe it's all they had and maybe they were actually informed that it has a starter motor fault so if it plays up give it a tap as part of a diagnosis technique to get it back to workshop. I nor you know the full story, so to blame the whole VGA as being unprofessional over something your " mate" saw is immature and rude. Pull your head in dude.
I agree. Maybe people have too much time to mind others business. In any life, I could see the tradsman to not always using the best suited tool for the job and even despite of that they managed to get it done.
I'm sure that the OP wouldn't mind what tool would the mechanic used to fix his car to get him going again, if he was stuck in the middle of nowhere for hours. So, why would you deprive someone else the same (the mechanic helping himself to get the job/task done)?

There is actually such a thing, wiki "percussive maintenance"
Percussive maintenance - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
After careful consideration I have to make a reply on the situation gti007 has brought up. I have spoken to a friend who works at Volkswagen and so the story is this. The up in question was an auto unit not yet supplied here in Australia. It did not start!! now with all there special equipment they chose to disregard using it and began to hit the starter motor to no avail. When if they had proceeded to use the genuine computer they would have noticed that no gear input was being read so in easy terms vehicle did not know if it was in park of neutral to authorize a start procedure. I agree with many members who agree with percussive maintenance but for a company to have guys hitting before thinking is totally stupid. Volkswagen makes sure that all dealerships carry out proper checks and work and are enforced by there regional managers maybe they should start looking at themselves if they have guys banging away. Will the damaged starter now be replaced???
Did you also take the time to identify which department the two individuals in question were from, and what their jobs entail?

Maybe they were just trying to kill a cockroach in the engine bay.
