Stop Start technology and smart keys .for and against .

I was working on a customers VW Passat the other day and I needed to drive her in her car to the local shops , she warned me the stop start was faulty and sometimes would not restart leaving her vunerable when stopped at intersections stop start traffic etc . I know these have an overide but has to be activated every time you drive the car after parking . I had to think was this some sort of device VW came up with to prevent the DSG from being damaged by slow crawling in traffic .
Secondly keyless start I cannot belive that this has come back into modern cars as my first car a 1952Morris Minor had a push button start after turning the key , Many of the cars I work on these days with keyless stop start ingnition are a pain in the bum to use , push the button to turn on the car push a second time to start , whats wrong with a simple insert key turn and start in one fluid motion ? I must be getting old as the more the world gets deeper into technology in cars the more its going to cost us when it goes belly up , Toyota today recalling millions of Prius models due to a glitch in the Hybrid system . Ok progress is inevitable but sometimes its pointless .

Of the several vehicles I have owned with keyless start, none have ever required more than a single press to start - if your foot is on the brake pedal. That’s BMW, Mercedes, Nissan, Ford, VW I’ve owned, all the same.

not sure how stop/start system prevents slow crawling in traffic...if the vehicle is moving, the engine is running and the vehicle is in-gear in my experience, no matter how slowly it’s proceeding

Yep both my 2010 Hyundai Santa fe and my 2016 RS Octy are both one press. If you don't have your foot on the brake (or the clutch for manuals) then it goes to accessories and doesn't start. Bit different to the put the key in and then press as you can have the key anywhere in the car, I have mine in my pocket or my workbag. Stop start I don't really see much in my manual Octavia as you have to put it in neutral and then let the clutch out. I don't do that at lights etc. But I know from driving the DSGs it comes on every stop pretty much, but it predates DSGs well an truly. Mazda used it quite early on to save fuel before VW started deploying it.

Recently disabled the stop start permanently in my Audi (using Carista) - absolutely drove me nuts. The Mazda we have owned for the past 3.5yrs cannot have the start stop disabled permanently - you must temporarily disable it each time you start the car.

As for push button start - i love it.

Is it easy to get out of the car without turning it off though? Pull up to a stop, the stop start turns the engine off, you chuck it in Park and get out with the smart key in your pocket/handbag? Is the car still on?

No, it will cut out if you walk off - it beeps in anger when you try.

Stop/start is to appease all the tree huggers who buy into carbon taxing so the manufacturers can drop a few points off their fuel cycle figures, nothing more. It is an annoyance.

Keyless start, I'm with the others, much prefer storing the key in my work bag and never getting it out.

One of the very 1st mods i did on my car was disabling stop/start do not regret it for a second

Start / stop doesn’t bother me in the least. I guess i’m Just used to the world changing.

Stop/Start is a non event and is hardly noticeable after a day or so, keyless entry is really good for those who get in and out of the car often and I imagine for those people who carry a bag with the key in it.
