Speed Cameras/Radar on Great Ocean Rd

Not that I am admitting to or encouraging speeding but are people aware of the new hidden radar gun equipped cops on the road between Airey's Inlet and Lorne? Apparently they now don the camo gear, hide in the bushes and catch cars or bikes on their radars, radio it through to their mate in Lorne, who then picks you up as you arrive for your cup of coffee. Haven't seen them myself () but a number of dudes from a bike shop in Geelong were nabbed a few weeks ago and most lost their licences. Then saw it in the newspaper a few days later. It is around about the only place you can overtake, not that unreasonable I suppose, but the Trumpy does crank it along there. Let alone the GTI. Getting rid of the complete nut cases on their superbikes could only be a good thing though, really does ruin the drive on a Summer's day. Actually those Camry drivers are much worse come to think of it

Good to know. Especially considering the spirited drive I had a couple of years ago in my MkV GTI

Being hidden is against the law. I would have to see one of them in cams before I believed it. And the GOR is a good drive wasted these days by f*ckwits who don't know what a bloody slow vehicle turn out lane is. If you aren't doing the speed limit, PULL OVER!!!!

in the uk it is against the law for the cops to hide, i didnt think it was the same here as you always see cop cars hiding in bushes on the Torquay road!!!

I agree with your comment about people not pulling over!!!
When i take friends down the GOR I ways watch my rear view mirror and let everyone past.

If you can see them, they aren't hiding. It's how they get around the rule. Be obscure but not totally hidden.

    lol, good idea

i thought in order for a cop to book you, they need to capture your speed, then pursue? because when they pull you up, you have a right to see the laser reading, which cant happen?
(not that im trying to find loopholes in the system or anything!!)

In NSW at least, the police cay fine you for speeding from one of their fixed wing cessena's! I also seem to remember as a kid in northern NSW small fixed wing police planes that timed cars between two lines on a road and then had a car pull you over up the road. Would be interesting to know exactly what the rules are in regards to bookings for speed.

I think one of the motorcycle forums had a cop who answered cop question (anonymously) for everyone. Very interesting reading. Maybe we should do a call out for a VWW highway patrol officers (has to be better than reading the actual laws we are expected to know). Anyway, just a thought.

just found this... refers more to stationary radars, but this paragraph could still be argued...

    Camera Concealment / Disguise
To maintain community confidence in the mobile road safety camera initiative, it is
important for the operational use of the system to be seen as fair and reasonable.
Under no circumstances are camera vehicles, tripods or portable flash units (when
used) to be disguised by signs, logos, breakdown of vehicle (eg. boot open or spare
wheel / jack visible etc), tree branches, lamp posts, rubbish bins or any other covert
    means.
