Broker is the easier option, but I'd be looking for a different freight company, even if it means organising pickup form your end.
Need some wisdom from the you all regarding shipping.
If i were to have a package sent over from the US, but the company say, literally:
"SHIPPING AND HANDLING ONLY TO AUSTRALIA VIA AIR FREIGHT DB SCHENKER (www.dbschenkerusa.com) IS $295.00 US DOLLARS (To Your Country International Airport Only!).
THANKS FOR YOUR INTEREST,
P.S. S&H RATE QUOTE DOES NOT INCLUDE CUSTOMS AND BROKERAGE FEES!"
How do you go about getting the package through customs etc i suppose you need a broker to do this? Is it an expensive exercise?
Thanks in advance

If it has an engine or heartbeat it's going to cost you. | Refer a Friend - AussieBroadband $50 Credit
I just imported a set of wheels using DB Shenker and i'll be picking them tomorow hurray!!!
Anyway getting back to you, if the freight is to an Australian Airport the airport will charge you IMPORT CHARGES and Custom will charge you CUSTOM CLEARANCE.
I got my wheels deliver to Tullamarine Airport in Melbourne and these are the fees:
IMPORT CHARGES
Import Terminal Fee* - AUD $65 Minimum or $0.10 per kg
Cargo Terminal Operators Fee* - AUD $30 Minimum or $0.33 per kg
Airline Documentation Fee* - AUD $25 per HAWB
Air Cargo Automation * - AUD $30 per HAWD
This [Import Charges] is what the airlines and the Airport charge to BD Shenker to move your cargo to DB Shenker's warehouse, as nothing can stay on the Airport's ground for more than 2 hours, I believe.
Then on top of that you have Custom Clearance charges.
CUSTOM CLEARNCE
Agency * - AUD $105 per entry (up to 10 lines)
Additional Entry Lines ^* - AUD $0.20 per line
Additional Supplier ^* - AUD $45 per supplier
Postage & Petties * - AUD $ 12 per shipment
Quarantine Entry Fee ^* - AUD $25 per shipment
Quarantine Inspection ^* - AUD $113 per shipment
Duty / GST - AUD At cost
Custom Electronic Fee - At cost
Landed Costing ^* - $25 per Landed Costing
* Subject to 10% GST
^ Only if applicable
So depending on what you want to import the fees will change accordingly. If you want to bring a small parcel i would suggest you look at door to door shipping that way you wont have to worry about all these fees as they would be included in you shipping cost.
Logging the custom clearance form can be done directly through DB Shenker or you can use broket if you prefer.

Thanks yo! Very informative..
wow, one of the guys over at OzAudi got tyres airfreighted from the US, and the total cost, (excluding the tyres themselves) delivered to his door was nowhere near that amount.
yes you still have to pay import duty 10% and GST 10% if its over $1000, but i'd be looking for a different service.
Check out www.tirerack.com and email them for a delivery quote.
I bring a lot of snowboard gear over and its usually delivered door to door via USPS, with total delivery costs at around 460ish, with absolutely none of the above charges (where the laded cost is under $1000), and when it goes over $1000, I paid Duty and GST, but the only extra costs was an agency fee of $60

Thanks for the replies guys...
I've got a quote for shipment to my door, i'm trying to weigh up if its cheaper if i did the work to get it out of customs and/or use a broker.
It seems to be almost the same price. I might as well get them to my door. Question now is if i should do it...ahahaha..
can i ask what your shipping in? all this can be avoided if under $1000........... well 20% cheaper anyway
elaborating on my earlier post, if the goods are less than $1000 and its not too large, its door to door probably via USPS and delivered in 5-6 days - total cost is around $70ish for freight.
If the good are over $1000, then add 10% for duty, then add another 10% for GST, then add around $70 for a local customs agent. Its still delivered door to door and still costs around $70ish for delivery, but you will have to pay the customs agent the duty/GST/fee before its released
