haha so true, was there a nice cloud of black smoke from him as well?
While diesels are good for economy and practicality, they don't quite fit in with sporty cars.
At the lights minding my own business yesterday in my Jetta when a 3-series diesel pulled alongside. I had all the windows down.
He then nailed it from the lights and a god-awful clatter reverberated around the cabin of the Jetta!
I dispatched him fairly easily with the 2.0T but geez, while diesels are getting better, they still sound like a diesel!![]()

Hate to say it, but the TSI engines have a marked clatter on startup and idle as well - all down to high pressure direct injection - which is a good thing power wise!
I think oilers have improved dramatically, for I couldn't even hear my own rattle over an old Peugeot 504 diesel that pulled up beside me a few days back, it was ludicrous - and no power for all that noise!

i think i must be one of the few people on this forum that doesnt give a single colonel of poo poo what a car sounds like.
super super quiet cars unsettle me, because i keep thinking that the engine is off when i cant hear it above ambient noise.
as for diesel sound vs sporty burble- dont give a crap either. anyone can replicate a good sound- just throw a back box or something onto a VS commodore SS- sounds tough as!
but not ''different'' enough for my liking. i enjoy being slightly different, hence part of the reason why i decided on a tdi polo.
that, and because for a non-sporty car, it does a pretty good job of dismissing VS/ VT v8's and same era xr8's in the twisties. AND i get 4.2L/100km on the highway.
yeah, it is pretty damn contradictory of me isnt it?
pretty ironic that quiet engines unsettle me, and yet i AM really looking forward to electric engines with their HUGE torque..... just as long as they've got an ''engine on'' light in the HUD, i should be okay, though
just think, folks, ferrari/porsche/lamborghini, and super enviro friendly electric/hydrogen hybrids.. mmmmmmmm
