Yeh, similar thing happened to me a few months back, light turns orange and I had enough room to not have to slam the brakes hard but then I saw a semi-trailer/large truck in my mirror so I quickly hit the accelerator again and it turned red just before (at least it seemed just before) I went over the stop line. Thankfully no fine or anything even though the GPS said red light camera ahead, before I reached the intersection.

I had a close call today on the receiving end from 3 cars in the same lane (stanley st) going through a red light when I was turning left just after the Stanley St Off ramp from the M3 (those that live southside Brisbane will know it is a pretty dangerous intersection for red runners). So I guess the red light cameras should discourage that kind of behaviour.

Cameras in Qld take two photos - once for entering the intersection on a red then 1second later. Probably similar in other states. It sounds like you were halfway across the intersection when the light turned red, therefore the camera flashed. It will then take another photo 1 second later. If you are clear of the intersection on the second photo, you won't get a ticket.

You may have a defence of emergency, just write a submission to the issuing authority about what happened. If the photos deem it to be possible what happened, the you'd be suprised they will most likely pull the ticket. Photo may show car behind you stopping at the light right on your hammer.

A couple of cameras in qld now have the red light and speed camera built into them.

The yellow light ticket is usually for people who get pulled up and say I didn't go through the red, it was yellow. Same fine.

Hope it works out for you.

My penalty was $30 and no points, so much less severe than running a red light. Ever heard this before"the cop just had it in for me"?

It is the same penalty as a red light these days.

Was driving along City Road in South Melbourne tonight. Light turns orange, I hit the brakes and start pulling up. Then I notice the guy behind me is going to rear end me, so I hit the gas and enter the intersection. The light is still orange. I don't get up to the speed limit. The light changes when I'm in mid intersection. There's a flash from somewhere.

I'm hoping that the flash wasn't for me, but I don't see who else could've triggered it.

It's nice when you have to choose between having an accident or a fine and demerits.
Ask for ALL photographs taken. You cannot and should not be fined unless the lights in ALL photographs show the lights as red. Speed/red light cameras do not take just one image, but a sequence of two or three photographs (depending on location).

Next, make sure you get the original unedited photographs. It is common practive for edited (cropped) photographs to be provided, and even split image photographs.

You can also request the fault history (false trigger history) of the particular intersection.

The detectors used for red light cameras are the same inductance loops that are used for sequencing traffic lights and detecting traffic density. If even one photograph shows that you were past the stop line, then the infringement is not legitimate as the offence is entering an intersection with a red light displayed.

Going by the competence of the Victorian authorities, you could well have a legitimate complaint. Just the other night there was a news item where a huge number of red light infringements that had to be withdrawn because the red came on too soon after the yellow was displayed (it varies depending on the speed limit).

Unfortunately ALL jusirdictions take the attitude that it will cost several thousand dollars to challenge it in court, and this is much larger than the fine. A point to note is that under most insurance policies, you must disclose all traffic offences to the insurer, and this can see your premiums go up.

Take legal advice, but the twisted thing is that paying the penalty is the same as admitting guilt.

Oh yes, if you challenge and are successful, make sure that the RTA (RMS or whatever they are called this week) do not apply demerit points (seeing as you indicate you are from Sydney in your profile).

Thanks. There's a lot of information that I wasn't aware of/hadn't considered. Will definitely be following this advice if/when an infringement arrives.

Having spoken with people who set these things up the sensor is on the line (most times u can see where they have cut to fit it) and it doesnt switch on till the light is red. Some cameras also detect the car, they take 2 photos so they can judge the speed or u stoped on the line.....so u can make the camera go nuts if you turn on a green arrow from the right lane which is red hehe.
I dont think u need to worry if u didnt cross the line whilst it was red.
