Ridiculous Speedometer Error and On Purpose !!!

    What is going on ???
I just checked my MK6 Golf (with Standard Diameter wheels) Speedo against a Garmin GPS and 3 different Apps on my iPhone and the Golf Speed is way way out.
    Golf says 43 , Actual 40
    Golf says 64 , Actual 60
    Golf says 107, Actual 100
    Golf says 118, Actual 110

    I am amazed !!!!
No wonder other cars have been sitting up my ass on the freeway (and I don't use the right hand lane either, as I though I was doing 100, but obviously going about 93).
Also, it would add nearly and hour onto a trip from Mel - Syd if I used the Golf Speedo instead of the real speed.

So I rang VW and told them that my Golf needed fixing - their response was just amazing - it is done on purpose for safety reasons !!! WTF - I thought the low speed limits were for safety reasons, not faulty Speedos. Did someone die and make VW God ???
    Are they for real ???
Has nanny state thinking really infiltrated into everything ???

So I said, I want my odometer wound back 7% when it gets to 100,000km - back to 93,000kms. Their quick response was that the Odometer is correct and has no error - so the Golf definitely has the ability to measure the correct speed, VW choose not to display it.

Anyone else think this is just totally bizarre ???

Now I know of the Speedo error, I am going to drive to the real speed anyway - 118kmh on the open road, so it defeats the purpose of a faulty Speedo, as it just teaches me to speed.

Do we have total morons running this country ??? (or more likely, they think we are total morons and just follow like sheep).

And finally, if everyone drove 7% faster, (i.e fixed up all speedos) then we could fit 7% more cars on the road - makes sense as a 64 minute trip will take 60 minutes, so for that 4 minutes you are not on the road.

Wouldn't that go a long way to fixing up the overcrowded Melbourne roads ???? and without even breaking the current speed limits - Seems like the best Win/Win I have heard in recent times.

    cheers

    Digger

    !!!

    What a load of rubbish.

The ADR rules since 2006 state that Speedos may read fast by up to 10% + - 4% so they can read up to 114kph at 100kph and still be legal. They must not read LESS than actual speed.

The odometers are run off a different source so will be fairly correct.

Shame you rang VW and made a bit of a fool of yourself isnt it.

Yes we do have morons in this country and not all are running it

Not all speedos read over by the same amount. One of mine is about 5.5 and the other is 7 So how can you say everyone should drive at the speed your car says.

The Toyota I used to have was dead right at 100kph.

Just because you are going faster doesnt allow more cars on the road. Speed limit in the USA is a lot higher and so are the traffic jams

Most cars are out by a percentage - but ill admit my Mk6 is higher than other cars ive had.

No big deal, i do 65 in 60 zones and 120 on the freeway (which works out to be around 111-112kph real speed) and never had an issue.

VW doesn't have a case to answer. The vehicle complies with the ADRs relating to the speedo, and that the odometer is not affected, as it is calculated separately.

The speedo can be adjusted with VWs diagnostic equipment, but I doubt a dealer will come to the party on it.

It's rare indeed to find a speedo that can be regarded as accurate — the only one I ever had that was even close was also a Toyota (1988 3lt Cressida) and even it (quite naturally) varied as the tyres wore down.

Mk 6 Golfs are a bit over the top — mine showed 100K at 92 with new tyres, my current Mk7 is closer to correct, but still reads high.

Maybe car makers need to change the sensing method to something like what the revenue cameras use?

Don't think it's anything to give yourself ulcers about, tho'.

    Hehe...

Under 100 I stick to indicated speed. Above that, its drive as fast as you dare.

Wish they all could Spent ages with a Ross Tech cable etc trying to correct both of mine and neither would do it. Tried all the solutions on here and other VW forums and none worked. Same with trying to auto retract mirrors. Could enter the right data and it accepts it but doesnt work and yes I have retractable mirrors.

I bought a HUD and stick to no more than 2 over the limit as they dont give you much leeway here in the Sunshine State.

My VW is 10% to fast on the speedo, if I do the right speed on my speedo I end up with other cars tailgating and overtaking me because I'm traveling 10% under the limit.

It is funny that I see so many people with the same problem, I asked my VW dealer about it and he said it's perfectly acceptable. I replied to him I will get him to state that in court when I get booked. The car I had before this one cost half as much and it was a Toyota, the speedo in that was dead on, I thought the Germans were suppose be big on accuracy. Even though it reads higher than my travel speed I find myself adjusting for it and when I hop into other cars I'm still driving 10% faster because I'm in the habit of doing it in mine. We have a lot of speed cameras around I wonder how many tickets I can expect to receive from driving with dodgey speedometers? I asked the dealer if they could correct it they know it a common issue and didn't want to do ****. Things like that I will remember when I go to buy my next car.

It may be an issue for you but its legal so they dont have to do anything about it.
It is your responsibility when driving other cars to abide by the rules whether you drive by your habits, good or bad. Better check whatever car you intend to buy because they all have to comply under the same ADR rule

My MK4 was out by +7, until I changed from 16 to 18 inch wheels now it is really close like +2.
Never bothered to check with the Mk5 I assumed it would be about the same, like every other car, reading slightly higher than actual, better than reading under.

So now you know why you never got that ticket passing the speed camera going 5km over
    MK4 GTI - Sold
    MK5 Jetta Turbo - Sold
    MK5 Jetta 2.Slow - Until it dies.
