I've been buying DVDs off the web, they are getting pretty cheap (but it is amusing to see the logos from the TV stations sometimes on the real cheapies )

Long Way Round / Long Way Down - Ewan Macgregor's motorbiking around the world, a good watch.
Also been watching Criminal Minds, I quite like the new Law and Order UK. Battlestar Galactica is no more... For sci-fi I enjoyed recently watching Firefly (a Joss Whedon show). It's actually pretty amusing, just need to take it in the spirit it was intended. One episode with Christina Hendricks as the captain's wife is brilliant - I nearly cried laughing.

The Wire.
Think of all the high tech, expensive stuff in CSI - then go the opposite. policing while the state is broke.
Big on character development, it could take a few episodes to get into.

I used to think I was anal-retentive until I started getting involved in car forums
Studio 60 on the Sunset Strip is a bloody excellent show.
Its based around a Saturday Night Live type sketch show, following the behind the scenes of making the show. Gets right into how advertising works, who runs the networks etc etc. I love it.
Only ran for 1 series, which is a damn shame but expected given that the show lacks the amount of murder and/or sex scenes required for any show in the States to be successful these days.
