Are there recalls on VW Passat TDI due to the emission scandal VW have?

This is the state of play for Australia as of today.... This could be the catalyst that sounds the death knell for Diesel powered cars worldwide....????

"Volkswagen Australia is in the dark about its connection to the environmental scandal that has engulfed the US arm of the German auto giant.

The local arm is awaiting official clarification from its head office in Germany to ascertain whether Australian vehicles have been affected".

Volkswagen Australia spokesman Karl Gehling declined to comment on the matter, only to say: "We have approached head office for clarification and we're awaiting feedback".

And if there is a recall in Australia it could very well derail the launch of the B8 Passat.

Even if there isn't a recall here they will take a hit in new car sales and don't get me started on resale values of used Volkswagen vehicles.

The fact the company did not learn from the DSG fiasco defies belief!

Well they did as the took ownership of the issue immediately and have set aside $ to rectify. They also increased the scale from 500k of cars to millions of cars.. They did lie though.

Funny how I could never get the mileage they claimed...

Or help convince VAG to introduce more petrol Passats ie: 206kw 4-motion R-line to name one. I really do believe what has come to light in recent days is a big enough issue that Diesel powered cars may begin to fall out of favour. When you consider just how far petrol engine technology has come with turbo power in smaller engines producing much less nasties & much better mileage it is seeming more likely....

Whilst I agree and do want the powerful VAG engines in passats, diesels no matter what will go further than a petrol. My S3 still only gets 550-600ks to a tank... But I still get up to 1000ks in my Passat wagon and that's my wife puttering short distances and me doing longer trips (it kills me to not be able to drive the S3)!!!!

Yep spot on mate, there is no doubt of that but, it seems it may be the only point left in the Diesels bag of tricks. I recalled hearing of some Euro cities banning Diesel cars & sure enough a Google search produced a number of articles on this. First city planning this is Paris with the possibility of London following.

We must ask ourselves the very simple question, why has VWAG (specifically, a few people in VWAG) & 'allegedly' other brands elected to rig the system so that it manipulates data making it seem Diesel is much cleaner & efficient than it actually is..? I think we know the answer to that, Diesel is inherently dirty & full of nasty stuff & no matter what is done to refine it, it will always be that way.

The argument for or against petrol engines & the further discussion of them producing CO2 (some say a pollutant, others say it isn't) is subjective & more or less a personal opinion but there is no doubt todays petrol & petrol engines are so much better & cleaner that their immediate future is much cleaner & will continue to be even cleaner than Diesel will ever be.

What is going to happen in this continuing saga..? I think it may be safe to say that VW will not be the only ones found to be implementing manipulating tech on Diesel engine data & reports in the media over the last 48hrs suggest BMW is now in the spotlight...

If necessary there will be a recall. The thing is that this is going to take months or even years to resolve as the first thing is to have their software certified, then for any required re-testing to be carried out and signed off on. The re-testing is not a single test but a series of tests over 80,000 km (or something like that) with only routine servicing carried out.

If all that passes, then it will allow them to get new cars out and they will then start any rectification work necessary.

Not that we have any trust in VAG now however this is what I read.

"Volkswagen's internal evaluation has found 5m cars were affected by the scandal. The group said on Tuesday that 11m vehicles worldwide were fitted with the software that allowed it to cheat US emissions tests, but it was not turned on in the bulk of them."

Seems that they can turn off the software so rectification should be fairly simple.
