    Question about Subaru

I was parked next to an Impreza last night, what I assumed was a debadged WRX.

It had a bodykit, wheels, the 4" exhaust with milo tin and the big bonnet scoop.

now, it was loud, but it didnt sound anything like a typical boxer exhaust note, sounded like an in-line 4.

any thoughts on whats been done to get this non-typical sound?

and would a turbo vs non-turbo make any notable difference to the expected exhaust sound?

Did it just have the cannon back-box? I have friend with a 2.5 Liberty and it just sounds like an inline 4 as well, but it is bog stock after all...

How new? The more recent ones have lost a lot of the boxer rumble due to a redesign of the exhaust system.
    Nothing to see here...

When the car is converted (as some WRX/STi owners do) to a twin scroll manifold/turbo setup it changes the exhaust note a fair bit as well.

May have been that... as unlikely as it is (few people do the conversion due to the cost/benefit)

You're right Manaz, it has to do with the length of the exhaust runners. If memory serves, anything after G3S1 suffered from the dreaded 'inline 4' syndrome.

After so many years of Sube ownership, I still don't understand why some choose to convert to TT, rather than upgrading to a responsive, twisted big single? I love Subarus but their G3 twin scrollers are positively awful... Pfffft even the OEM light-pressure setup in a stock Mk IV GTI is better!

yup, as has been said, tuned length headers will turn a sweet sounding subaru to a howling honda instantly
