Purchasing a vehicle privately from interstate?

Very interested in purchasing a car from Victoria/NSW as they seem to be much more plentiful of R32s/GTIs compared to anywhere else.

    1. In general terms, what do I need to make sure happens when purchasing a car privately?

    2. Which questions should I be asking to the seller? Seems fairly obvious, but I don't want to MISS anything.

    3. What do I need to do upon my return to SA? I am assuming that if I do a transfer of ownership in the other state, I can drive home but have to re-register it in SA within 14 days?

I have done a few ones from state to state and like you i am looking to do it again soon (vic-wa).
Just do all your normal checks. I get a once over by a mechanic, in vic ring vicroads and see if the car is still under finance and if there is any reported problems. No matter what state you get it from get ALL the paper work ie: transfer of ownership from that state AND a signed receipt with vin number. This will save you any troubles once you transfer it to your state rego and other than that see if there is anything else your state requires before rego.
That is the process that i go through, everyone does it slightly different.
    Cheers

I bought my S3 from Qld to WA.

Make sure you get a very reliable VW specialist mechanic to look it over (and not some generic RAC guy), and specifically ask him to advise you on things like how much life left in clutch, brakes etc, condition of paintwork, upholstery, suspension - the things that you might be interested in, and not want problems with.

Also ask for any evidence of crash repairs

Its well worth handing over $200ish for a good mechanical inspection
