    Panoramic sunroofs

Our last few cars have always had sunroofs (I love them) and our Golf MK7 on order is coming with what VW & Audi call a "panoramic sunroof".

So far I've only seen them in photos and from a distance (and I havent made up my mind whether I like the large expanse of black.)

Anyway I'm looking for opinions from VW or Audi owners who have one of these sort of sunroofs and how they find them in comparison to the traditional style they may have previously owned.

    Vinyl the whole roof black

I've never owned one (but will probably order one in my next VW) and have only experienced one on the sister in laws black Polo. I like them

Despise them. Crossed it off the options list when we considered a Tiguan last year, and crossed it straight off the list when we saw the Mk7 Golf was fitted with same. But each to their own.

Agree that I'd be seriously considering wrapping the rest of the roof in black to finish it off.

On the positive side for me it means I can spend what I might have put towards the roof towards something else instead.

I love the sunroof on my Mk5 Golf that I specifically ordered. In fact it gets used almost every time I drive. It started when I hired a car in the UK & found I used it all the time. When I first saw the panoramic roof in the VW showroom I wasn't sure I liked them. I purchased a S/H Tiguan & one of the options fitted was the panoramic roof. I now love that. During winter I leave the blind rolled back & enjoy the warmth of the sun.
Understand how it works, troubleshoot logically BEFORE replacing parts.

The panoramic sunroof minimises the previous issue with headroom intrusion, as the roof now opens externally. Of course, if you and your front seat passenger are not giraffes, then this is probably of little benefit. Panoramic sunroofs

Thanks for the comments guys, I feel a bit reassured (though I'd probably get the sunroof option even it was just a sawn hole and sheet of clear glass).

But am I getting cynical in my old age and wondering if this kind of sunroof is cheaper to manufacture than the regular kind?

I love sunroofs and have had them in every car now for many years. The sunroof in my C63 is invariably open in all weather.

My better half has an Audi A3 8P sportback with the full panoramic roof. Looks sensational but as a sunroof it completely sucks. Actual sunroof is n external slider so you get lots of wind buffetting etc. I will never add panoramic sunroof to another vehicle order.

Really? Isn't there an effective wind deflector? Do you know if the 8V sunroof is similar to that of the 8P, as the 8V is the same as the Golf? I hope the sunroof that will be supplied with my Golf R does not fall short of my expectations.

I've driven an S3 8V sedan with the panoramic roof open, and there was no buffeting at all at 60km/h. I was listening out for it too. I've ordered one.

Any sunroof that sits externally rather than being an internal slider will create noise and buffetting. If well done you will find 60 kph fine but 100 kph may well be far from fine. The A3 8P is fine in traffic save for the small opening. I suppose it depends if you have the roof open at all speeds.
