Only 6 Weeks, and time to part :(

    Hey Guys,

Well after 6 months of waiting, and 6 weeks of owning, it appears that I am moving to Canada for work, alas, have a couple of questions about how to process the sales of my car on carsales,

Currently have a few buyers wanting to buy, with a guy coming on Saturday, to look, drive, and buy,

Out of interest, apart from cash, how do you accept form of Payment,

A Bank Cheque is great, but can be cancelled when they drive away with the car?

Has anyone sold of Carsales, and if so, how did you do it

Also, is there anything else apart from the Notice of Disposal form from the RTA that I need to fill out to disposed of the car?

    Cheers S....

Oh man, sorry to hear you have to part with the ride bud. From what I went through, all I had to do was sign over the registration to the new owner.

If I were you, I'd ask for a bank transfer. I don't believe they can cancel a bank cheque, as it has already been paid for.

As for Canada, hope you like it. It's a really nice place to live, but can get really cold. I'm from there originally. Whereabouts are you moving to?

The best thing is to have the money cleared in your bank account - there can be potential problems with bank cheque hence why most dealers won't hand the car over until the cheque has cleared. That said, go with your gut feel on whether the buyer can be trusted, I did when I sold the car, I knew the buyer wasn't going to stiff me.

That and the section below it that transfers the ownership to the buyer.

Thanks mate, Bank Transfer that what I was thinking!

Toronto at this stage, was there for the passed week, and found a beautiful spot, The Beach, to live, know it gets cold, but always nice for a change,

Cash is always possible, but for a car of it's value it's unlikely. Bank transfer is possible, although the seller would have to wait for the funds to clear before I'd release the car. Bank cheque is next best and if your really keen you could insist on the funds clearing into your account before you let them take the car, hell if you could insist on going to the bank with then to organise the transfer/deposit.

It's unlikely you would get screwed over, but it's always going to be up to you, if the guy seems dodgy you don't have to sell the car.

Hooba - Thanks for the RTA form heads up, will have them promptly out on Saturday

The hawk - That what I was thinking to do, east-gardens (NSW) banks are open on a Saturday, meaning we can both shoot down there, transfer money (both with the same bank)

Nice and Simple, Cheers Again Guys!

Nothing else needed, just the rego document.

Also you can lodge the notice of disposal online on the RTA website, just make sure you have all the details on the rego document.

Oh and regarding payment, personally I would take a bank cheque. As a buyer I would never do a bank transfer for that amount of money and allow the seller to keep the car until it cleared.

There are some things you can do to validate a bank cheque. Find out in advance what bank will be issuing it and look up what security marks you can expect to see on it, also if you accept the cheque during bank hours you can call the bank and have them confirm that they issued the cheque before you hand over the keys.

Also, make sure you get a good cash deposit or bank transfer when they say they will take the car, no cheques at this point.

When I sold my last car I took a deposit by bank transfer (only took the car off the market when that had cleared) then final payment by bank cheque.

Just for the record, bank cheques can be cancelled, hence why its important to wait until cleared before handing it over.
    Good luck and enjoy Canada!
