Old Euro toy car - unbias opinion

After all my VW has gone, I've been keep looking for my next toy car, it has to be Euro.
I'm down to the following list :-

Mk2 GTI (2 door, 4 door doesn't matter, as long as it is good condition) - none in the market now
pos - classic look, con - slow

    MK3 VR6 - 2 good one in carsales
pos - fast, con - expensive to maintain, drink too much fuel.

    E30 318IS (2 door)
pos - combination of Mk2/VR6, con - nothing that I can think of

Since this is a VW forum I know a lot of you guys will knock down BMW but 2 doors E30 is my all time favourite. For those who have driven both old VW and BMW please give 'unbias' opinion.

E30s are cool and with a few mods they are quite a rewarding car to drive. You really need to wring the neck off the 318is to get any performance out of it. Id spring for a 323i or a 325i.. Just more grunt.

i agree with tim, 325 is the way forward for a BMW....but that will make it drink the same as a VR and a 318 will be sluggish like a mk2 (well, not that slow lol)

personally its mk2 GTI FTW, timeless car..IMO

I have a 318is I bought as a '****ter' daily runaround, it cost $5900 and was suppossed to be just an interim measure until I ordered a MKVI GTi.....but I really quite like it...and hence have'nt bothered signing up for the VDub yet!

I have only travelled 1800kms in 3 months with it...as I would in the GTi if I bought it...so hard to justify the added $35000 or so dollars!

As a performance reference...it is noticeable less puncy in day to day driving than my TDi Caddy...and I would say slower outright also

Not that I don't like E36, but E30 looks a lot cooler IMO

Have you driven one yet? They arent rocket ships.
I think the main difference over the standard 318i engine is the higher compression? They go ok but you do need to keep them on the boil.

There twin cam, not single ala 318i.

Claim is 104kw or some such....but must be shetland ponies...because they are SLOW.

God fuel economy however, mines returning 7.6l/100kms...700kms per tank
