Why can't TomTom release a double din unit that car makers use? Surely it can't be more to licence that over what they are using now? Especially considering the portables are so damn cheap!

Apple's CarPlay (and hopefully an Android equivalent) might just be the answer for lots of people since they can then run better apps on the phone.
By a Mazda CX5 and you will get an inbuilt Tomtom but don't expect free maps for life or anything like that.

You have to pay and download them to an SD card and update the Tomtom on my friends one

I've been really happy with the Android unit I put in the wife's Golf.

Being Android its fully configurable, run whatever nav software you want (I prefer iGo or Sygic) which has all the alerts, access to the internet either via your phone tethered or a USB GSM modem for live traffic etc.

Can also stream service like Pandora, Rdio, or your home network in my case.

It is a shame that my Nokia isn't built into the dash. Maps are downloaded over wifi for whatever countries you want. It was great on my second trip to USA last year as I downloaded the maps before I went. They get much more regular and up to date maps for free than the VW disc. I would love to merge the maps and features into the RNS510 along with Cortana

The MIO. I lent it to someone. It was good for the trip I had it for as the maps were up to date. I bought the Nokia 920 between trips and found it easier as it was as good as any navigator with voice command and tracking. It also works without phone signal which some phones don't do. Maybe I should locate the MIO but it only had USA maps on it where my phone has USA, Australia/NZ and any other map I need to download at no cost.
The MIO did have the occasional lockup but did get me to Four corners(the only place in America where four states touch) from Vegas and back via route 66.

Without starting World War 3 i'll add my ten cents worth , I have for the last 5 years or so purchased double din head units for our Transporters from China . I use one for my work van 2005 Transporter so its the standard rectangular model 7 inch touch screen also have the latest T5 with the larger 8 inchscreen all feature AM FM Bluetooth music and phone and contacts , digital TV plays CD's DVD's Data discs with MP3 WMA etc . built in GPS with picture in picture function absolute latest Igo Primo software , it has every type of warning you could need school zones red light cameras speed camera's you can add new ones yourself . It gives warning in bush areas for wildlife black spots crash zones all the tunnels in Brisbane and maintains directions inside the tunnels even with signal loss { I think its based on the entry average speed before losing signal}. The unit also has Ipod connection USB inputs with a dongle you can surf the net plus WIFI when near a hotspot , SD card slot , reverse and forward recording camera whew so much for so little how much $450 delivered to my door and best one of the lot NO bloody coding required .
