Now tell me my son does not know what he is talking about and how you know he doesn't. I asked him the specific question tonight and he said the old manufactured items can be identified by corrosion where the new parts being fitted are still covered in protective oil film and come wrapped in oiled paper.
Some people like to imagine some sensational conspiracy theory while others just seek facts. Thanks for sharing your son's knowledge.

I think there was relevance for a dedicated thread on the B6 and B7 Passat forum, but never mind.

The Takata airbag recall only covers MY10 B6 Passats and all B7 Passats. Other information I’ve seen states that it is only the steering wheel airbag that is possibly defective.

From late 2009 all MY10 Passats with the exception of the R36 were upgraded with the new style steering wheel that were continued on with the B7 Passat. The MY10 and MY10.5 R36 still used the older B6 steering wheel that had been on R36s since 2008.

It stands to reason then that although MY10 Passats have been included in the Takata airbag recall, the R36 should be exempt because I don’t believe the old style steering wheel contains a Takata airbag.

Does anyone have more specific information on this?

We need to wait and see.

Volkswagen will be doing their own internal investigation to detirmine exactly which airbags went into which vehicles.

The current list will be an educated guess.

I'm tipping two trips to the dealer. One to inspect and confirm, the other to carry out the work.

There is one sure thing in all this, the list published is just the start and more cars will be added.

Then there's all the people who changed their Mk5 steering wheels for Mk6 units so the steering wheel controls worked with more modern stereos. How do we keep that information updated? I might stick with my standard wheel and stereo in my Mk5 Jetta now...

In due course, there'll be information on applicable part numbers.

They can only go off how the car left the production line. What changes are made to the car over time, are out of VW's hands.

It is a can of worms. I have a friend who has a Toyota Corolla that had the Alpha inflator. He had it replaced as part of a recall some 3 years ago, but now Toyota does not know if the replacement is one of the other troublesome inflators or an inflator that is not part of the recall! To find out he will have to book his car in to have it inspected to find out what the story is.

Golf Mk6. Does it mean the entire gamut of Golfs? TSI, TDI, GTI and R?

I changed my B7 Passat's steering wheel with a second hand GTI wheel and so consequently the more round/circular air bag/horn assembly is slightly different from the more triangular shape of the OEM item.

Can you tell from the item part number toward whether it's going to have an Alpha type inflator?

I've lost a bit of trust for VW from their (in)actions in the things that goes wrong with their vehicles and how it's all someone else's problem.

Will the replacement of air bag be a case of cutting out the air bag from the part? Or the entire replacement of the assembly?

FYI I just got in touch with VW to update my details. I asked if they could confirm if my vehicle (MY10.5 R36 Wagon) was affected by the recall and the answer was yes and that I would be contacted.
