have you got a budget for the site?
What are you looking to do? I might be able to put you in contact with someone but proper arty farty people charge top dollar
no budget yet, got no idea how much to spend. site is kinda forum based for surfing, dont want to give much away. the domain name is registered and i made a website construction page already for it.... Surfm8 - Site Coming Soon! any help would be good tim. we want lots of surf companies involved so it needs to look really professional![]()
Its not unusual for someone with the relevant skills to charge $100+ per hour. Thats why it makes a big difference in what youre trying to do on the site. If you can just slot in an existing off the shelf package, cms, etc and then customise it a little bit then its not so scary.
There is also the issue of ongoing backups/maintenance as well.
My wife tinkers on the side and works for peanuts, shoot me a PM if you some details.

hey mate, want to open a dialogue?
i wont be able to help you if you're after fancy sites with award winning graphic design, like many of the sites that you'd find in the search results if you googled "melbourne web design" for example, but i've started to get my hands "dirty" when it comes to both designing the websites themselves, as well as sorting out the administrator type stuff, between domain selling sites and hosting servers.
my "angle", when it comes to sites, is:
- simple sites with a "welcome, this is who we are" style landing page.
- quick to load and visually pleasing (but i dont do flash plugins)
- easy to find menus that make all other visible (to the web surfer) pages easy to locate and access
- photo, slideshow (with music), audio files, and youtube videos able to be placed on the site, on whatever page you want
- contact / email, twitter, facebook, and youtube buttons / linking
- ultimately, a simple, effective way of not being ''visually mindblowing" like hardcore graphics design companies, but rather, an effective way to share the information you are providing, with your audience.
both of these are works in progress (some admin stuff needs to be sorted out, which i'll get to), but check these out if you want an idea of what i'm talking about (p.s. i've constructed all of these from scratch, no wordpress-style templates):
super basic one page site that i uploaded to show my old man how the admin side of things works, whilst we were getting pissed
my dj cousin's site (soon to be properly launched)
my ski japan guide site
even if you're not interested, let me know if you've got other questions regarding admin stuff etc - when i bought my first domain name, i didnt have an effing clue what i was doing, but i knew i wanted to get a site on the web without having to spend thousands and thousands to hire someone in a plush office in the city. it's definitely hard work, and i spent A LOT of time WAYYYYYYY out of my comfort zone, many hours of confusion etc, so if there's any way i can help a fellow dubber, i'd be happy to.
cheers,
scotty
