Artist's impressions of future Volkswagen small car reveal sleek new look.
This could be what Volkswagen's next-generation Golf will look like.
Drive has obtained a pair of speculative renderings of VW's all-new Golf small car, which is set to be unveiled in 2012.
The new model is expected to gain a more angular design over the current model, with sharper, more aggressive lines at the front and rear of the car. The design of the headlights, grille and bumper are all expected to echo recently introduced models such as the Jetta and Passat.The new-look model is set to be built on the VW Group's more space-efficient modular "MQB" underpinnings (Audi's next-gen A3 will be the first car built on the platform).
The new underpinnings will grant the Mk VII Golf a longer wheelbase (space between front and rear wheels) and a wider stance, giving the car more presence on the road and more space inside.
The new underpinnings will also make the next-gen Golf considerably lighter, with some reports suggesting savings of up to 130kg over the current model, meaning fuel use and noxious gas emissions will inevitably drop.
Engine options aren't expected to stray too far from the current model's powerplants, with choices of turbocharged 1.2-, 1.4-, 1.8- and 2.0-litre engines all likely.
Alongside the conventionally fuelled versions will be a plug-in electric model. The Golf EV has been confirmed for release at a later date (possibly 2013).
VW will likely mirror its current Golf lineup with a choice of three- and five-door hatchbacks, a five-door station wagon and a two-door convertible.

The MkV and MkVI GTI were launched almost at the same time as the regular versions, right?
Nah. The MK6 Golf arrived in Australia late February 2009.
The GTI arrived in September 2009.
The R arrived in June 2010.
Keep in mind, the MK6 chassis was really only a MK5.5, so the "AWD" adaptation/provisioning in the MKV had already been done, and the engine was taken from existing models too. The MK7 is a completely different platform, so it could be longer... who knows?!
That would give the Golf 6 a 4 year life,which,expecially for a VW ,is very short...
As I said, the MK6 was really the MK5.5. The MKV was still meant to be around.
The MK7 was meant to be the MK6, but VW had to make the MK6 that is out know because the MKV was designed without consultation of the production engineers and took way too long to assemble, making it unprofitable for VW. Even after a few years of production optimisation, it was still taking way too long, so they made the MK6 (MK5.5) to resolve the production length issue.
This is why the Audi A3 was never updated etc - the MK6 was not a new platform.
I guess I never really paid attention to Golfs until the GTIs were released
So looks like another 2 years, 2015? Before we can see the Rs, and 2014 till GTI?
It gets confusing,because the ALL NEW Jetta is built on a brand new plarform...
