FWIW I had a set of PS4s on my Mk5 Golf GTI but ditched them for another set of ContiSportContact 5. I'm pretty fussy on ride and the PS4s were just too stiff and crashy on my Mk5. I dropped pressures as low as I was prepared to go but they were still still too harsh for me and the roads I frequent. CSC5 have that bit more compliance but similar performance, albeit not quite as tactile in steering response. The PS4 is the best tyre I've ever used in that respect.

I reckon the PS4 would be utterly brilliant on a Mk7 GTI, given that model's better suspension compliance.

I will have to purchase a set of 4 for the Passat before Christmas, and ride comfort is more important than pin sharp steering. Might look at the PS3 which are at a great price and have the $100 cashback, although I really like the CSC5 which are OE fitment.

PS3 are great in that respect. I've just put a 2nd set on our Euro Accord. Very happy with them as a touring/performance tyre. The PS4 is a very different tyre to the PS3 - much more hard-edged and performance focused. CSC5 probably halfway between them in comfort, but in terms of performance pretty close to PS4 in most respects.

Just fitted a set of PS4's to my 2013 Superb TDI. Agree with your comments on stiffer sidewalls compared to the P7's OEM fits anyway. Certainly a firmer ride and road surface feedback that was not present before. Best part is the marked reduction in tyre noise! Also like the more precise steering feel and more connected response to steering input.

Love the PS4s so far! Wet or dry they grip the road brilliantly and just want the car to push back into straight line. The sales guy also offered me the contisportcontact 5s but these tires are upper performance and won't last near as much as the PS4s plus the PS4s are a much quiter road tire.

I wasn't looking for super performance tyres - I needed quiet, mid-high performance, long KMs tyres and the PS4s fit my requirements.

The PS3s are a runout tyre which are being superseeded by the PS4s.

As for the stuff ride issue you had Splashalot: if you have a sports car then be prepared for a stiffer ride overall IMO. I drive a MK6 Golf R and the ride is much better than on previous stock Bridgestone RE050A i had. 😀

The PS3 was designed as a budget equivalent, as the PSS was the replacement for the PS2.
(At least - that's how I understand it)
Is the PS4 a replacement for the PSS, or the PS4?

I love my PS3's, but definitely going the PSS next time! (or PS4?!)

I'm running PSS now and they are not worth the extra cost

I think maybe you misunderstood my point - I was happy with the ride on CSC5s but unhappy with the ride on PS4s.

I found the PS4 no quieter than the CSC4. At least not on my Mk5 GTI. Your case may be different (ie, different cars, road surfaces etc.).

No arguments about the PS4's grip, though. Especially in the wet. The day I had them fitted we had torrential rain and I was amazed how well the PS4s cut through it. But then the Contis are also outstanding in the wet.

Just a quick update.

I bought 4x Michelin PS4 for the wife's Passat, using the above deals and saving $225. Bob Jane took $100 off the invoice and I got the $125 credit from Amex in 2 days. The final cost was $129 each.

After 250km of suburban and freeway driving, the PS4 handle as well as the Conti CSC5 that were OE. The tyre noise is similar. The two tyres are so similar that I wouldn't be able the pick the difference in a blind test.

After our usual Christmas sojourn, I have travelled 1500km on the Pilot Sport 4 and I am pleased to report as posted above, they were very similar to the OEM Continental CSC5 with possibly a little extra grip and steering sharpness.

I had the opposite experience! I put Michelin PS4s on my Passat before Christmas and was very disappointed. Ride comfort and low noise were brilliant but the sidewalls were far too soft for them to be considered a performance tyre. They were very poor in communicating information to the driver and hopeless in a slalom. I even tried pushing the pressures up to 45 psi but they still felt like mushy marsh mellows.

My mechanic suggested Continentals would be very similar. I got rid of the PS4s and went back to Bridgestone - RE003 this time. They are so much more responsive. Yes they are more noisy with a harsher ride, but that's not important to me.

What does all this say about our opposite experiences with PS4s? I guess tyres are very much a personal preference!
